I just started running Curse Of Strahd (5e) with my friends, and it is a blast through 2 sessions. Has anyone played the campaign before? Or really any 5e campaigns?

Sorry in advance if this board is just for video games!

I'm sure most of us 40 or so or older were paper and pen players in the 70s and 80s. Just couldn't get past the Hasbro/WotC cash grab with their churning editions. As they struggled with their business model, video game alternatives got better and better.

I haven't touched the stuff in years, certainly not 5e, although I hear good things about it.

I can definitely understand that. I’ve only been playing a year or so, but I’m enjoying the game a ton. Can’t really compare it to older editions, but 5e has been great. I’m itching to try 3.5 or Pathfinder to get a little more in depth with character creation too.

I had a subscription to Dragon Magazine, many years ago. At some point, the actual publisher had a falling out with WotC and they started issuing those Pathfinder magazines, which were a hybrid between the old Dragon and a module on steroids. I kept it for a while. I was impressed at the effort they put into those things, but ultimately, I just didn't have the space for them and I dropped it.

Apparently Pathfinder 2.0 is launching this month, so the topic is somewhat timely.

It just dropped a week or so ago. I haven't read any reviews yet, but it looks promising.

I think they said they would be simplifying some things in the same way WoTC did when they moved to 5e. Not nearly as drastic though.

I became interested a couple of years ago after falling down a YouTube rabbit hole and happening upon Critical Role. Before that, I only tangentially knew what TTRPGs and D&D were about.

I started off playing, but our first group dissolved quickly, so I now DM a homebrew campaign using 5e. It can be stressful at times, especially creating your own world and story while simultaneously trying to entertain your friends, but it’s incredibly rewarding. My only regret is that I didn’t start sooner.

My thoughts exactly! I'm stuck DMing for my table as well. My buddy is about to run Dragon Heist for us soon. Really looking forward to that. Gotta figure out which class I want for that one.

Not 5e, but several of my friends play that and I listen to some of the play podcasts (The Adventure Zone and Not Another D&D Podcast).

My wife and I play Pathfinder and Shadowrun (though the second mostly just at conventions). I've played over my life:
Original D&D
Adv D&D 1st Ed
Adv D&D 2nd Ed
3rd Edition D&D
3.5 D&D
4th Edition D&D (albeit very briefly)
Pathfinder
Shadowrun 4th & 5th editions
Star Wars - d6 system
Star Wars - Edge of the Empire
Rifts
Rolemaster

I'm usually cool giving something a try at least a few times.

It is quite different - I've skimmed through the book a bit.

Feats are broken up in a few categories now, with only a very small number of feats open to everyone. Most feats are class specific.
Paladin is gone (in place is the Champion - probably to cater to people wanting to play Neutral Paladins, etc)
Alchemist is now a core class

I haven't done a deep dive yet. I'm not sure if the game is really "simplified" or not from Pathfinder 1st edition.

The Adventure Zone is great! That is interesting about the feat set up. The feat system was what had me most interested in trying Pathfinder.

Yeah, it is SUPER different now. Not bad per se, but I also haven't tried it out in a game setting yet. I do know they tweaked quite a bit from the playtest.

5e is a decent intro to fantasy rpg. It's not too crunchy, but there's also not much to character building from what I see.

I'm reading through Pathfinder 2e's core and I'm mostly liking it, it's trying to curb the absurd string of math you could do in Pathfinder. It also takes parts from 5 or so books in the 1st edition and brings it all into the start.

Puffin Forest in YouTube is a fun listen for 5e stuff if you ever want to annoy office mates. He animates a few stories of participating in the dungeon league.

I don't play often, but I have fun whenever I do play. Found myself enjoying Pathfinder more.

Puffin Forrest is pretty solid, I just can't watch a ton of his videos back to back. The Animated Spellbook is another solid YouTube series

I've been back playing D&D for about 10 months now after a 15-year or so hiatus from playing table top RPGs, and I'm glad to be back to playing it.

I started out with 1st/2nd edition back in the 90s when someone gave them to my buddy, then we played a lot of the White Wolf games set in the original World of Darkness (probably my favorite setting).

Throw in some sessions of BattleTech (I think), various Star Wars, some edition of Lord of the Rings, and something loosely set in the Angle/Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe (good rule set) over the years.

Wish I played a bit more than every other week.

Same here. It's gotten a bit better for me with Roll20 and a smaller group though.

I got a game where we get together when. We can so it can be months apart. 4 years old now. But we like playing face to face.
