Started in earnest a few days ago. Love the game so far. Would be interested in bouncing some questions off some seasoned vets.

Been playing since ARR. Don’t play as much anymore but will be jumping back in for the new expansion.

Ask away unless it’s PvP related

Here's what I've been wondering at level 27, at about level 16 of the story quests:
Classes - the advice I read was get a main class to max first then go back to the other ones I'm interested in as it moves the story along and gets access to all the features. Is this right? I'm a Marauder and enjoy it.
Gear - So far I've been using stuff that I craft for myself. Is there a smarter way to approach gear?
Crafting - I've been leveling a few of the ones that seem the most relevant. First 20 levels or so were simple as you could buy it all, but now I'm running into recipes with harder to acquire materials. Tips for how to approach from there?
Materia - should I even mess with this yet?
Aside from working through MSQ and class quest and side quests, anything else I should make a frequent habit?

quote:That’s good advice. I pretty much took the same approach and only played around with other jobs after doing a couple expansions. Tanking a good start too. Short queue times.

quote:You’ll get a ton of gear from quests/dungeons as you level up so it’ll quickly outclass whatever you can craft right now. Honestly I wouldn’t worry about self crafting combat gear until maybe around 70-90.

Since you’re pretty low level I’d consider focusing on gathering jobs early on until you open up more of the world and then focus on crafting jobs. A lot of the ingredients are spread out all over so you might not even have access to the spot to acquire it yourself.
You also have your gathering log too. Can show you where to find most ingredients needed for something. Some nodes only spawn around a certain world time.
Eorzea database is a good resource too. Should always pop up on a Google search. Lots of community people dropping locations and spawn times in the comments.
quote:Use it on crafting/gathering gear but just stash the combat stuff you won’t need them until you’re later on. 50 at the earliest if you want to raid but that’s only if you’re sweaty
Materia - should I even mess with this yet?

Goldsaucer. Daily mgp scratch offs and get your numbers in upstairs for a chance at a “cactpot” every Saturday.

Sell on the market board assuming you’re not on a trial. A lot of that early game stuff can make you a fortune and I wish I knew it early on.
Check out palace of the dead. Still the best deep dungeon in the game.

Thanks man, this is great. There's so much info online now that it's honestly hard to find direct answers.
For the market board-- so if I needed some certain ingredients rather than flying over to the place to gather, I could just look and odds are someone went and gathered 1000 of them and is selling it there?
You also mention not worrying about self-crafting. Should I just buy better gear off the market board as well? I am running into the constraints of things being in far off lands I can't easily get to yet.
I haven't even looked at the gathering log yet. I only went around and found the entry level gathering log quests.
Hunt bills - I haven't even looked at them yet. I also don't even know what a Grand Company is. I joined a free company for about 20 minutes then left.
I did make it to the Gold Saucer. Those scratchoffs do seem useful.

quote:yea 100%. If you can't find it on your server, just go to another on your data center and see if they have it. Also a good idea to hop around to shop for better prices.

Universalis I've been using this for years. Can search market boards for your server/data center online.

quote:Each major town (Uldah, Limsa Lominsa, Gridania) has a grand company quest and you'll become a member of whichever one you choose. The choice doesn't matter, I picked the one closest to the main aetheryte which is Gridania. But they have the hunt bills and other vendors you can mess around with.

Makes sense. I'm a few quests away from that it seems.
When it comes to rolling on loot in dungeons, do all I need to do is hit need or greed and once everyone's done that the roll happens or the timer runs out? Just want to be a good party mate.
With the gear you get from dungeons, what's the best thing to do with it? Sell it somewhere, or is there a mechanism to break down for materials?

You can only roll need for the job you’re on and I usually greed the rest for other jobs.
Best thing to do with the gear is to save it for other jobs. You’ll get a chocobo saddlebag soon and you can stash stuff at retainers. Check out the major cities for the retainer vocate npc to set that up. Need one to sell stuff on the market board

Wow PVP sucks. Avoiding that for awhile.
I feel like I'm already racking up a fair amount of green stuff that I may never use. Is there a desynth or something for materials or do I just sell them if i get too full?

quote:think you have to get a craft job to 30 to unlock the desynthesis quest. Then you'll be able to break stuff (weapons, armor, housing items, fish) down from your inventory/armory chest. Quest will be in Uldah

Proud omni-90
Wasn’t sure what to make of Dawntrail with the previous story arc wrapped but the launch trailer slaps
I’ll add to any q’s you have. There’s a lot to pick up as a new player

Tips for leveling gathering class? Is there anything secret other than just getting out there and gathering for hours?
Tips for leveling crafting classes? Do I just work through the entire crafting log and eventually settle on something high level that I can craft reliably based on what I gathered?
This kind of crosses over, but for ranking up quickly in Grand Company. So far I'm getting most of my medals from turning in crafting and Grand Company supply/provisioning. I"m not high level enough yet for Hunt Bills. Anything else that can get me seals?

Is buying a house actually a process? I watched a video on it and it seemed like you had to put up money to get into a lottery. And do those money amount of several million gil eventually become chump change?

quote:Levequests for both crafting/gathering. I have no idea where to find them in the earlier parts of the game but it’s basically gathering/crafting side missions. Usually near a major town’s market area but I think I’m ARR they’re spread out around the world more. Just look on your map for an icon that looks like 2 silver cards with an exclamation point on it.

Another good way to level up crafting is to pick something easy to craft around your level, gather/buy a bunch of the materials needed and craft in bulk.
quote:Daily roulettes, fates, dungeon gear turn in, think hunting log gives them too can’t remember. Tbh this will be way easier to do when you’re later in the game when you have access to higher level dungeons/more roulette options. Heavensward expac on up you’ll get way more seals compared to what you’re getting now.

Basically there’s a lottery day where you can buy into a lottery for a housing plot. Think this happens every other week or something can’t remember.
Best housing tip I can give is the older the area, the easier it will be to get it house.
Oh yea you can buy an apartment too. No wait, just find the place and buy a room for 500k. If your fc has a house you can buy a room at their home as well.

I didn’t really actively craft or gather for exp much at all. Entirely passive
I would not worry about actively grinding for GC rank. You can get that passively as well. You’re not locked out of anything particularly valuable beyond cosmetic stuff

I took a break for 9 months or so, but I'm back in getting ready for the expansion. I've kept my sub since 2.0 launched.

This is largely true. You'll also unlock some bonuses that make it easier to level other classes once you get farther along.

Don't bother at that level imo. Takes too much time and isn't really necessary. The gear you get from dungeons is more than enough to get you on your way until you finish ARR.

Use Grand Company turn-ins. Buy the cheap/bonus EXP items from market board and you'll get several levels each day. You'll unlock more dailies once you get farther into the game.
If you feel like that you have to level crafters/gatherers without more progress in MSQ, I would just rely on leves. Grinding out crafting logs and such is very inefficient.

Materia - should I even mess with this yet?
No.

MSQ and class quests are your #1 priority. You're already way overleveled for the story content, so I would spend time just on that if you're able.

I see large plots for houses run for 50 million gil. Does that number become achievable at some point? Because through all the MSQ (at level 35 quests right now) and a ton of side questing I still haven't even cracked 400k.

Yes. You get big money from crafting glamour gear and submarines in FC houses.
