For pure gaming I'd wait for the 3D V Cache models.

Those are showing +30% gains over regular Zen 4 in gaming.

i7-8700k paired with 32 gigs of RAM running a 3080Ti

ETA: I'm only running at 2K resolution though.

An 8700k is kind of slotted between the 3600 and 5600x in gaming performance. At 3440x1440 and a 3080, I saw a significant increase in performance in most games going from a 3600 to a 5800x. You would absolutely see a significant increase at 1440p standard going from an 8700k to Zen 4, at least based on what AMD is saying. But wait a few more weeks and there should be tons of apples to apples real world gaming benchmarks to take a look at before making a decision.

That’s what I’m eyeing. Wait a year or so, let the 3D cache models come out, let DDR5 mature a bit. Then do a fresh build.

Oh I've got time. I won't really start looking until probably early next year. Like you said in your other post, I want to give DDR5 time to get out all the kinks and hopefully come down in price a bit.

It's going to take so much self control not to pull the trigger then. When I start salivating over it, y'all remind me that I'm waiting for the next Zen 4 gen before I bite

Latest leak is that there will be x3D versions of the 7800x, 7900x, and 7950x announced at CES in January. For anyone who wants to jump into Zen 4 in this first generation but exclusively games, I would suggest you wait at least until that point.

I’ll stick it out a while with my 5800x.

Reminder that this means a full system rebuild, as Zen 4 uses a new socket that isn’t compatible with previous motherboards, etc.

I was just about to post and ask this. I have a 5700g processor and was hoping to upgrade to one of these but do not want to have to deal with a mb too.

Maybe this will drive down the prices on the 5950x at least.

As a rule, the highest core count cpu of each generation tends to be the most resistant to price reductions. Out of curiosity, what beastly production task are you doing to want that core monster?

Nothing, but I do some gaming that is CPU intensive and the 5700G I have is my bottleneck.

I’m not aware of any games that use 16c/32t. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find games that find a way to truly utilize 8/16. For pure gaming, the difference between a 5600x and a 5800x is small. The difference between a 5800x, 5900x, and 5950x is basically non existent.

If you’re looking for a gaming upgrade on the AM4 platform, it should almost certainly be a 5800x3D.

But, it’s possible there could be some niche exception. What do you play?

Nothing extreme. World of Warcraft and Flight Simulator. Again, they aren't extreme but between my RTX3070Ti and the 5700G processor, the 5700G is the bottleneck. I knew the 5700G wasn't great, but I needed integrated graphics since I damned sure wasn't going to get a discrete card anytime soon. I used that 5700G for graphics for a year, lol.

Then yeah, if you want to upgrade within the AM4 ecosystem, catch a 5800x3D on sale for around $400. Best gaming chip on the market and you save yourself a few hundred bucks in the process.
