I feel like to be truly good at games like this and starcraft, you almost can't enjoy playing it.

You just need to practice. RTS games are really stressful at first, but a lot of what you're stressing about now becomes second nature.
You're not wrong though. RTS games fell out of favor for a reason.

I played RTS games casually with friends, so the clicks per minute thing was never something at which I aspired to be efficient.
I feel like after playing LoL, maybe that CPM thing will come more naturally.
How many people on here actually play?
I played AoE Conqueror's Expansion for years, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just was never dedicated enough to be above average at it. Your first 10 minutes seemingly needs to be auto programmed into your brain and/or with muscle memory to be REALLY good.

Do you guys have a favorite civ? I've been playing a lot of Malians atm.
Man at arms into archers for feudal and eventually switch over to Farimba Camels/Cavaliers unless playing against a meso civ in which case I'll go champions with the extra pierce armor (civ bonus)

Huns and franks are my fave because I’m a scrub and I like my decision making simple. I’m gonna go scouts into knight/paladin. You know it, I know it, and everyone else in the lobby knows it. It’s easier to stop but it’s easier on me too which I need

Well at least the newest patch makes melee pathing better. Beforehand it was suicide to open scouts but it's kind of like the Voobly days now where scouts can actually engage archers instead of stuttering over themselves. Franks are one of my favs as well.

Celts are my all time favorite Civ. I am a major siege whore. I usually mass heavy scorpions with some onagers for support. Very difficult for anything to get near, including cavalry.
But with the new civs, I have been partial to the Cumans. I love the Fuedal age TC.

Knights and Axemen to kill the halbs.
