My thoughts too Cosmo.
They set a price based on production costs, shipping costs and the amount of profit they think the market will bear.
And people pay it.
Why would they sell them for less that what people will pay?

They generally insist on shipping by air to keep the cakes fresh. That more than doubles the delivered cost. I've shipped them before using USPS flat-rate boxes. The medium box is about $12 which includes the price of the box itself. A supermarket king cake fits perfectly in it and it takes two days.

Most places are shipping it via overnight air and they just use a flat rate. They have it averaged out based on general history of delivery locations to make sure they don't lose money on shipping.
They are a little expensive I feel, but the out of town folks love Haydels. Their box comes with a mardi gras guide, dabloons, beads, and I guess a little bag of coffee sometimes.
You are kind of paying for a service when you ship via online ordering.

As someone living more than 2000 miles west of the motherland....when you want something from home, you pay a bit more. It sucks but if you have the disposable income to have a little taste of home you do it.
