I think you're talking about Baton Rouge.

Your premise is incorrect. If you have any evidence whatsoever to support it, I'd be interested to see it.

Crown Royal sucks arse, but it's pretty popular all over the South.

That says far more for your "friends and relatives" than it does for NOLA.

Right. NOLA is a cocktail town. It's not known as such because everyone drinks crown and coke.

I actually drink crown every now and then but it has nothing to do with my relationship with NOLA.

I find it's smooth enough for a mixed drink. For higher quality Bourbon and Whiskey there are some other things I prefer. Namely Bulleit and Blanton's. Bulleit is my go to that I keep at the house and Blanton's is my bourbon that I indulge in when I'm sober.

What I don't get is the earlier post that somehow seemed to equate Crown with Jamesons. Whuh?

Anyway, and I promise I don't mean this to be offensive (it's probably just my ignorance), but I think of Crown as being sort low on the totem pole. I first noticed it years ago when I was visiting my redneck friends in North Louisiana they were drinking it.

Like I said, I think it holds up great as a mixer, but it's not really something you would want to drink with just water, or soda, or by itself.

It's smooth enough for that purpose, but it doesn't have that much flavor.

And I agree that it doesn't taste like Jameson at all

Or any Irish Whiskey for that matter. I keep some Bushmill's at the house and I don't think it would mix well with sodas like crown does. But I think it stands alone a little better. Maybe I'm crazy.

Yep, I wouldn't mix an Irish whiskey with anything like that. By the way, give Tullamore Dew a shot. For some reason, I've grown to like it.

Will do. I'm trying to appreciate gin these days. Not working out like I planned.

I had to lay off the gin for years because I went nuts when I drank it. I've taken it back up again because I love it and think I can handle it better (or I just don't give a shite). I alternate between Hendricks and Hayman Old Tom.

I keep hendrick's at the house. Occasionally I'll do one of those gin cucumber martinis. Usually my cucumbers wind up in a Pimm's cup or a salad though

Just a little FYI on Crown. I toured the George Dicklel Distillery (they are owned by the same company that owns Crown, Diageo plc). ~10% of Crown is blended with George Dickel Tennessee Whisky (and that is the correct spelling of Whisky for George Dickel).

I heard this about gin for years. Why would you go more "nuts" form drinking gin than if you drank any other distilled sprits? Gin is just flavored vodka, flavored with juniper berries (not really a berry, more of a pine cone) and other herbs.

Perhaps the flavor masks the taste of the alcohol and makes people not as aware of how much booze they are consuming

Try mixing vodka with something sweet like pineapple juice and it just goes down like water because it kills the taste of the booze

I think you are 100% right on this.

Pman, since you live in Texas you ought to give these guys a try: Yellow Rose and Garrison Borthers. You're pretty fortunate because you live in a state with a lot of craft distilleries. I find that these small guys really put out quality spirits because they pay a lot more attention to the "cuts" than the big high volume guys do.

The food here is lacking but I have no problem finding good brew. Although it's tough to find at any bar other than B and J's pizza. The liquor stores here do have a healthy selection of craft beer though.

I'm just pumped that I found a place with a nice assortment of Ska Brewing Co beer (place in Durango, CO)

I'm laughing because it seems like every CO city has a microbrewery on every street corner. I''ve never heard of Ska. I'll keep an eye out for them next time I'm in the package store.
