This one overtook the 2 amburana finished whiskeys I tried last year as the most unique pour of the year (IMO).
But is it good? I’m debating buying one from the distiller website, but I’m hesitant to pay $80 and be burned.

I would suggest tasting before purchasing. It’s a very unique pour and I could see some people not enjoying it. For me, it’s fine and I don’t regret the purchase, but at the same time I’m not going to be searching out another bottle when I’m done with this one.

I have some tequila finished in amburana barrels. It is a really unique flavor.

Haven’t had a bad amburana bottle yet, if it isn’t for you I’m sure someone here would enjoy it, who has one for $80?

I believe he’s referring to the Smoke Wagon Malted Rye that I posted.

Update: unsurprisingly this was the most enjoyable blind I've done. Willett won overall, coming in first on the nose and palate. I gave the edge to GTS over RR13 for the nose, but they were in reverse order for the palate. The RR13 had more complexity. I think the palate is more important than the nose so gave RR13 the tiebreaker for second.
Willet came in second for our blind two Fridays ago, but really it was a tie. Two of us had it and GTS absolutely tied, but a random selection picked GTS for each of us. Two picked willet, which JelleyClown saying it was by far his favorite, and Lunch liked GTS best. 3 firsts to GTS, 2 to Willet, but 2 of those GTS votes were true ties.
I’m with you in the willer fanclub. Our previous blind a few months back had EHTlotC, Four Gate, Michters Rye 10, Rebel 10 and….. Noah’s Mill.
NM placed first for me, and it finished third overall. I know people hate on willet, which I used to, but damn it’s great. In blinds its standard $50 release holds its own against some heavy hitters.
That herbal funk used to turn me off, but the last year or so mg palate has changed. I went from disliking turkey and willet to now enjoying both, and willet in particular has become one of my absolute favorite pours.
Make mine Willet

What year GTS was at the tasting? Ofcourse everyone hypes the new stuff but 22 should be good since there wasn’t a 21

That red hots cinnamon does it for me, awesome note that I get on the bourbon and rye. I also appreciate how they change when set out for a while. Super different on the nose and palate if left out for 15-20 minutes.

Correct. I received the free shipping email today and now am considering buying the malted rye. Sounds like it would be in my wheelhouse, but I felt the same way with high west single malt release last year. That $70 stinker became a donation to the sewage and water board. I’m back to my pre bourbon craze days of try before buying an expensive bottle, or at least have enough sources I trust vouching for it

The malted rye is weird, very fruity like apple juice almost, but then grainy as well (assuming that’s the malt). Spice on the backend from the rye, really complex and not something I would go to multiple times in the same night, or even multiple times in the same week.

I believe it was 17? It was Lunch’s bottle, so he’d have to confirm. It was great, but so was my 9yr willet. The other 3 bottles were a clear 3-5 behind.
I still think the best bottle I’ve ever had was GTS the night before the rams saints debacle. My buddy brought it over, we drank about 2/3 of it that night, witnessed first hand the rape by the refs the next day, and I finished the rest of the bottle the remaining week.
I can’t disassociate these two things now

That’s right up my alley, and yea that’s the malt. It should have a bowl of dry cereal note to it. Not Frosted Flakes, but whole grain cereal or even cheerios.
I’ve really gotten into the single malts, so I’ve been seeking them out here in America through crafts. ASW is still one of the best out there for American malt. Anyway, back to topic; I’ve developed a palate for the malted whiskies, so this falls in line with what I’d expect. I may pull the trigger tomorrow

Unlike the HW, you can find plenty of people who would take the SW off your hands if you don't like it. It's unique in the right ways to me. Given what you said about malted whiskey, it's probably less of a risk for you than others. I don't mind sending you a sample if you want to try it first.
Getting back to Willett, has anyone tried the 8 yr wheated? I am especially interested in hearing thoughts from those who really like the rest of their line.

Once the GTS, Willet and RR13 hit your palate it’s an easy signal from all 3 as they differentiate like said earlier, and they pace themselves far from the backups. This board has some variations for sure that warrant a taste off
