Anybody ever try this? 100% corn

quote:

Bourbon conjures up images of Kentucky, but Hudson Baby Bourbon Whiskey is the first legal bourbon whiskey to be distilled in New York since Prohibition. To be called Bourbon, a spirit must be made from at least 51 per cent corn, but this single grain spirit is made from 100 per cent New York corn, then aged in American Oak. Thick but not syrupy, the 92-proof Bourbon offers aromas of banana. This hand-made Tuthilltown Spirits product goes down clean, sweet and smooth with a slight bite. Its aftertaste is almost peaty, making this a good choice for Scotch fans.

Got this as a gift and there isn't much online about it. I had never heard of it either. Haven't cracked it open. Might be a holiday try.

Bourbon: Wathen’s Single Barrel Bourbon
Distillery: Charles Medley Distillery, Owensboro, Kentucky
Age: 8 years, label reads Barrel Number 789 and Hand Bottled on 12/9/08
Proof: 47% ABV; 94% proof
Notes: For 250 years and eight generations, the Medley family has been making Bourbon. Charles W. Medley and his son Sam Wathen Medley carry that tradition on today.
Color: Golden Caramel
Nose: Mild tobacco, brown sugar.
Taste: Refined, delicate and deep at the same time. Approachable floral notes complimented by a leathery, mild oak and vanilla. A light mouthfeel with a richness all its own. A smooth and buttery texture that will keep you reaching for another pour after you thought you were finished.
Finish: Light with touches of banana bread and cinnamon.

Just back from marcello's. They've been out of Jefferson for over a month, I was a lil disappointed. These two oughta hold me over for the weekend.

Really a fan of the Elmer T. Lee. Been reading about the 4 roses single barrel and it gets really good reviews for the price.

Yeah I noticed that too. If its as good as the reviews say, $38 isn't bad at all.

The Four Roses Single Barrel is definitely a good value. It's a nice and complex bourbon with a pretty good punch too. Due to the price and quality, it's usually on the shelf at my place.

On my list to buy and try is the Limited Edition for 2012. Four Roses has several different mashbills they use and they select one of them each year for a special release. The 2011 version got ok reviews, but the 2012 has gotten some great reviews. It's a bit pricey at around $70 but I've heard it's well worth it and has been compared to the Buffalo Trace antique collection.

I really wanted to try rock hill farms but they don't carry it. Is it usually tough to find?

I haven't had problems getting it here in Jackson, but there are a couple stores that I frequent that have really good bourbon selections so that may be why. I know my little bro has gotten it before in Baton Rouge, I think it was Churchills that had it. Since it's a Buffalo Trace product, it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I'm boycotting Churchills. I saw the PVW 15 listed at $200 and 23 at $500.

That's ridiculous.

Hey Doc. I need to pick up a bottle of scotch for my sisters new boyfriend. I like the guy a lot and think I may splurge a little so he will feel welcomed. What do you suggest? TIA

Scotch is sometimes tricky unless you know the type he prefers. Do you know if he likes peated or not? The Islays will almost all be peated and they are renowned in their their own rite. The Speyside single malts are often pretty similar to bourbon since they spend a good bit of time in used bourbon barrels. Also have the scotch that spends most of the time in sherry casks. So, it really depends on personal tastes and there are good ones in each category.

Care to share said stores? I'm heading up that way to hunt between Christmas and New Year's and I'll be glad to leave some Louisiana dollars in the local economy if you and Coater tell me where to find my bourbon and beer.

To previous question, I was in Whole Foods (BR) today and they had a couple of bottles of Rock Hill Farms left. I bought one last week, but haven't opened it yet. Also had Noah's Mill, which I've been enjoying it (also found at Calandro's and Martin's). Calandro's is the only other place I have seen Rock Hill in Baton Rouge, but then again, I don't tend to wander from my few SBR spots. Very likely Cuban and Marcello's have it too.

Sure thing. The three most common stores I go to are Silver Leaf Wine and Spirits in Ridgeland, Kat's Wine on Fortification in Jackson, and Wine & Spirits in the Quarter on Lakeland in Jackson. Occasionally I go to Colony Wine Market in Madison when I'm in that area, they have a good selection also and it's right off I55 if you're just traveling through.

Thanks! Now, which one is most likely to have bottles of Pappy still on the shelves....

I mean...

I know where all of those are. Actually usually go out Lakeland Drive to get to my cousin's place on the north end of the reservoir, and it looks like Silver Leaf wouldn't be too far out of the way either.

Please keep your reviews on small batch bourbon's coming-it is so much easier than combing though some of the bourbon websites, and cheaper than my tasting binges at the Cove.

Good luck with that one! Most of the places allot it way in advance to their top spenders. Parlor Market, a local restaurant, often has it if you want to pay for a glass of it. They also can set up some tastings of their top stuff which I've done in the past. It's a good way to try some of the high end stuff without buying a whole bottle.

Will try to get back into it soon. I've been pretty busy with the wedding and my last year of residency. I'll be mostly in the books and hospital from now until August, but after that, I'm hoping to get some new stuff.

Got a bottle of this from Specs yesterday, haven't tried it yet. The guy there said it was pretty good and was getting good reviews. I will report back.
