I've still got an unopened bottle of it. I'm thinking it will eventually be used for high octane old fashions(my cocktail of choice) and mint julips.

ECBP is like liquid Tootsie Rolls. Delish! And no burn... Dangerous pour :)

As some of you may know, Master Distillers tend not to drink their own whiskies over 55%-58% ABV. That means the distillers don't recommend that you drink George T Stagg or other high proof whiskies at their out-of-the-bottle levels. They highly recommend dilution with water. In fact, when tasting their own products, they almost always dilute to the flavor they want, and leave it to you to do the same.

However, with the recent Explosion in bourbon, many newcomers don't know about this.

To that end, I wanted to share the Formula that works best for me. It was formulated by the Bourbon Critic Chuck Cowdery.

The formula is Wi * ((bP/dP)-1) = Wa

Wi = amount of whiskey
bP = bottle proof
dP = desired proof
Wa = amount of water to add to achieve desired proof (desired proof usually somewhere between 100 to 118 proof.)

Chuck Said:
quote:

Obviously, anything below 55% ABV I enjoy at bottle strength. Above that, not really. Even Old Grand-Dad 114, at just 57%, gets a little water in my house. The 55% ceiling is arbitrary, but holds up well.

Producers offer some products at high proof because they sell, but I know of none that the producer feels drink better at that proof. Most will give you the same advice I did.

Try it out a few times on limited amounts (2oz). Figure out what your generally preferred proof level is.

I never drink barrel proof like Stagg, etc neat, not enjoyable to me. I usually just throw in 1 cube and that gets me where I want to be.

Bowman single barrel, Jefferson very old, bowman small batch, hirsch in that order.

For the barrel proof stuff I usually add some ice...in my glen glasses it's usually a few small chunks I get from the dispenser

The first time I try a new barrel proof, I take the first few sips neat. After that, I almost always drink it with an ice sphere and sip it slowly. The one exception being William Larue Weller. I really don't find ice or water helps it. I love it neat.

I'll get to the whiskey soon, but thought I'd start the evening with some of the rum I picked up in the Bahamas...you can only get it there. Very tasty.
