It does. What that author fails to realize that while he is right there are also different phases of frozenness. The bigger ice chunks are colder in the middle for longer due to the thickness. It keeps the rest of the ice colder as well causing the surface area to cool the drink at a more effective rate while not having to melt to do so.

I don't think he fails to realize that at all by stating this:

quote:

The significant cooling comes from ice’s heat of fusion, which is a whopping 80 cal/g. This is what pulls heat out of your drink and lowers its temperature.

He's saying the melting of the ice is what causes the temperature to drop and that
quote:

some of the cooling comes from raising the temperature of the ice from below freezing up to the melting point. But that’s small beer. The specific heat of ice (0.50 cal/g-K) is only about half that of water (and about equal to that of ethanol), so raising the temperature of ice does little to lower the temperature of your drink.

It is stock from the closed down Michters distillery. It was distilled in the spring of 1974 and then aged for 16 years. When the distillery was closed the remaining stock was bought and has been slowly making it's way to market. A large amount of this bourbon was exported overseas.

When I first really got into higher end bourbon my liquor store was carrying this. I bought my first bottle because it was distilled at the same time I was born and I thought that was cool. Over the years I probably drank 12-15 bottles of the stuff and it is the best bourbon I have ever had. When I first started buying it 6 or 7 years ago it ran about 50 to 60 a bottle. It started getting hard to find and then it was given a 5 star rating by a prestigious group, the first ever for a bourbon. After that the price has been skyrocketing. My Dad last year purchased two bottles for $450 each. If I had only had a glass of it before I might have bought one myself but I couldn't bring myself to pay 450 for what I used to pay 60 for.

I thought all of it had been released but when I was in the liquor store today there were 2 bottles on the shelf for 789 each. They also had a 10 year and 20 year michters with the 20 yea being 389. So either somebody restarted the michters distillery or someone else is using the name now.

OF #1: Probably added a tad too much bitters.

1 sugar cube, bitters to saturate, splash of water

muddle

orange skin (no pith)

muddle

rocks to the top

2 oz. makers

garnish

Not bad but like I said, next one will have less bitters.

Lets get this weekend started.
No it's not a traditional glass. Big whoop, wanna fight about it?

Yeah the last batch that was released had already been bottled. Preiss Imports dumped 1000 bottles back into stainless and rebottled it in crystal with a matching humidor. So that may be what he saw in SF. I think retail on that set started at 1000.

Had a glass of Stagg at Mansur's before dinner last night... So good...

They had all of the Van Winkles om the menu but the only ones I would want to try are the 20 and the 23 and I wasnt spending $40 or $65 on 2 ounces of whiskey

Just made a sazerac with Jefferson's rye, which is a pretty good rye whiskey but i think sazerac rye 6yr old is just as good (if not better) when you can find it and rittenhouse bib is solid at a better price.

But picked up a bottle of Four Roses Secretariat today, figure I'll open it next time there's a triple crown winner (or if I'm ever running low on bourbon)

Cool, saves me a trip to the store where I would spend more money on bourbon.

I grabbed a bottle of this from my local place for $38. I'm assuming this is not the same stuff right. It's Hirsch Selection Small Batch Reserve.
