How old is that Willett?

Don't laugh but it is 2 years old. It has the most unique range of flavors of any non finished rye that I have ever had.

I love the 2 yr...it's good alone but it can really intensify and change the flavors of a cocktail nicely.

I have a cpl of the 2 years. I don't care for them alone but maybe I'll open one up to make sazeracs with. Do you have a open one? Want to trade some so I can see before I pop the top on mine?

I love the 2 year as well. I tend to drink it over a big cube but I'm a fan. It's definitely unrefined goodness. Just finished a bottle a week ago, need to get some more.

Looks like a relapse to me (pmp ecbp, and kc).... All of the bourbon crap is going to deaden your pallet for the magnificence of scotch.

This flight was by far the most difficult of the recent flights. Although they are so similar in location and age they were so different in taste. So this time, I am not going to be able to rank them best to worst. They are just different.

Tomatin: Oddly little color. Solid flavor. A bit sweet. Strong apple juice flavor. Not very much complexity.
Glenfiddich: I think I have said all there is to say. It is delicious. Complex. Solid enjoyable finish.
Balvenie: Honestly. A little underwhelming considering the price point. Very similar in flavor, complexity, and finish to the Glenfiddich but not as good at any of them. Expected more.
Dalwhinnie: Holy peatyness. By far the peatiest (is that a word?) highland scotch I have ever tried. It rivaled the Talisker but still far behind the Islays.
Balvenie (Caribbean Cask): I have said it before, I will say it again... It is too sweet. Single note of sweet. Little complexity. Solid finish.
Aberlour: A solid pour but lacks the complexity of the Glenfiddich and the Balvenie. A bit too harsh in the finish for me. Solid but not spectacular.

I have had all of those...I agree that GF15 and Balvenie 15 are the standouts.

I just don't get the love for the Carribean Cask

I think the Carribean cask is a great starting point for bourbon lovers who want to get into scotch. It is much sweeter than a Glenfiddich or highland park and that's where the appeal lies. It has notes of peat and smoke but still is sweet and pleasant to drink. Taking someone who drinks Weller 12 and Buffalo trace and trying to get them to taste Lagavulin and you will most likely turn them away from scotch all together. It has its purpose just like everything else and is enjoyable to plenty.

Thats a great point. Having not had much scotch I jumped right into Lagavulin 16 at a bar and MAN was I taken back. Luckily I wasn't footing the bill. Also had a Maccallan 21 that night. I was well served by that point so I enjoyed the Mccallan more but who knows what I would like more in a side by side.

Yeah it can definitely be hard to transition into scotch from bourbon if you don't know what you're doing. I definitely don't know much about scotch but a couple years ago Churchills told my lady that me, a primarily bourbon drinker, would enjoy the Carribean Cask and I did for sure. There are definitely several others you can transition into as well. I really enjoy Tomatin 18 and the 12 is good too. I have Glenlivet 16 Nadurra that is tasty as well that is easy to drink, has some great smoke quality, but not overbearing or too strong for me.

So Caribbean Cask is like the Crown Royal Maple of scotch....?

Lagavulin would be kinda like the EH Taylor barrel proof. Delicious to a regular bourbon drinker but a bit strong to a novice.

Yes that's the idea except I think 14 year old Balvenie scotch finished in a rum cask is of slightly better quality than Crown Royal Maple...

Agreed. When comparing a scotch to any other whiskey the scotch is always better!!

Except Crown Royal isn't bourbon, it's Canadian Whiskey...
