I would rather pay more money for an average beer and keep it local, than pay more for a better foreign beer. That's just me.

Then support a better local brewery - Parish or Nola. Soon we'll have Chafunkta out of Covington also, and Mudbug out of Houma iirc..although IDK how long it'll take for those breweries to get beers to the BR area. Abita has great distribution and plenty of capacity to brew, they just are content with making mediocre stuff for the most part. I don't think everything they make is bad, but most of it is the very definition of "meh" and I just think they're capable of way more than what they put out, and some of their Select series stuff proves that, yet they don't bother to bottle any of that.

I do. I support ALL of them. Not going to buy some Belgium beer. Very rarely. Every now and then I will splurge. I believe keeping it local. That's just my thing.
Thanks for the insight on the Houma and Covington breweries opening up. Excited about that.

That is great, but don't call people stupid if they think that Abita, although local, makes mediocre beers.

It was just a joke. We are on TD. A message board. I don't take this seriously.

Compared to other American craft breweries.

I rarely buy foreign imported beer; what I get isn't always local, but it's American. But my favorite beers are typically Belgian inspired. Anyway, to each his own.. I do buy Abita products when I have to because I would rather drink Abita than drink BMC, but if there's something that I think is better I'm definitely going to get that.

Stella, Kalik, Canebrake, Guiness, St Pauls,....I'm a beer guy. For a local brewery I can't ask for much more.

Why not? Is it absurd to expect a huge brewery like Abita to put out great product?
Look, I'm not the seasoned "maven" some of the other posters are, but I've tried a fair amount of different beers. Abita is nothing special, and generates very little interest outside of Louisiana.

Yeah, I should have ignored it but I had a moment of weakness.

the frick you can't!
For Louisiana's flagship brewery, it is sad what type of products Abita puts out. How about a stout? A DIPA? Actually bottling some of their Select Series.
No, let's keep making goddamn lagers with different types of fruit extracts. Yeah, that is all we should expect from our local breweries.

I've never claimed to be an expert, in fact I'll acknowledge I'm far from it, especially compared to most of the other heavy hitters in the FBD thread. But please, tell me where I'm wrong in this thread.

I don't think Parish Brewing Company is much better than Abita at all. Lots of people wet their pants over their beers.

Canebrake and Envie are solid, easy-drinking beers... abeit pretty plain for their style. Better than any wheat or pale ale (besides Mayhawk) that Abita has put out, imho. Their Farmhouse IPA was very tasty, although way overcarbonated. I haven't tried their Grand Reserve to make a judgement, but I hear nothing but good things. IMO, overall, Parish puts out better quality beers in a much, much smaller facility.
Eta
I do believe some people overhype their stuff, though. I used to be one of them.
