Whole bean is always the way to go. A burr grinder is a great investment for coffee lovers.
I prefer French press, then cold Brew. But I've forced myself to stop being a coffee snob, so I can enjoy a cup of drip coffee from a a 7-11.

I like a medium brew. I was using 8 o'clock and Green Mountain Breakfast Blend. They were out, so I tried Great Value Breakfast Blend and I love it.
