Made one this weekend. It was ok, not a big fan to begin with. Just gave it a shot while we were doing a big fry day.

You related to the Duggars? I saw a show once and they were bragging about this huge tater tot casserole. Looked like the entire family had had the stomach virus.

The whole question is unfair, because there will always be a restaurant that will have better equipment, better quality ingredients, and yes, even more time to pay attention to detail than you.
I think that we at home can really make a better meal than MOST restaurants, though, if we pay attention to detail and spend the extra time to do things right. One area is making your own stocks.
Only the best restaurants will make their own beef stock or chicken stock from scratch. If you make an onion soup with a beef stock cooked for hours upon hours and onions slowly and delicately browned, it will be better than most restaurant's onion soup.
if you make a chicken noodle soup with homemade stock done correctly you've got a nice head start on the vast majority of restaurants out there.

Good points all....
Truth be known, the whole cooking better than the other guy is pretty simple, and boils down to a few things. As you said, ingredients, house made, equipment, and I will add proper execution and technique.

Mike, thanks for making some good points early on.
Most the rest of the people in this thread are a bunch of fricking assholes. You say that at other peoples houses they make terrible food. So guess what, I think maybe yall are the ones with the bad taste if you think jambalaya or gumbo from restaurants are better than home made. See how that viewpoint works. Bunch of elitist food dickheads have reappeared in this thread.

I've had some awful homemade versions of gumbo and jambalaya. That's the problem here. Not all homemade dishes are good and it's pretty broad for anyone to say "I can cook ___________better than any restaurant.? They haven't eaten __________at every restaurant that makes it. That's why this thread doesn't work. It has nothing to do with being an elitist.
I can say I make excellent gumbo, but I have no idea if there's a restaurant out there that makes it better than I do for my tastes. I haven't eaten it in every restaurant possible and, as someone pointed out, some mom and pop joints do a pretty good job on dishes that are also traditionally made well in the home by folks who know how to cook. I can't say I believe I make better shrimp gumbo than Downtown Don's in Lafayette. I don't make shrimp gumbo better than they do. Theirs is better than mine, though I've come pretty close.
There are a few restaurants I know of that put out a much better gumbo than some I've had made at someone's home. If you want to name specific restaurants, that makes sense. Mine is better than Landry's, thank the good lawd, for example.
I can't say that I make anything better than any restaurant and that's what the OP asked.
So, don't be calling me a dickhead.

Can I say I've never eaten a gumbo as good as mine in a restaurant?
