I need some opinions and options. We happen to be in Northwestern Germany(Nordrhein Westfalen). What beers should we try? We prefer dark beers but are open to other options.

Not necessarily northern Germany but Altbiers are delicious in their own rite.

eta Dusseldorf is about an hour from you. It is where Altbiers originated.

Which city are you or will you be in more than one city? Köln has a few decent options.

I recommend Braustelle in Köln.

We fell in love with Augustiner beers but can’t get them here. We got a couple of Schwartzbiers and a couple of Dunkels.

We are in Recklinghausen and can’t go far from there due to restricted visiting hours at the hospital. This is a family emergency trip. We are just looking for things to try once we get back to the apartment each day.

To be honest, just go to the nearest Brauhaus. You really can't go wrong with any beer in Germany.

+1 to the poster who said kölsch. You should be able to find it there that close to Köln/Dusseldorf.

Oh, and make sure you get a döner. You can thank me later.

You really can't go wrong. Go to a grocery and ask someone to recommend something. In a bar, check out what others are drinking. Kölsch is really good, if you can get it there.

And get a Döner, with Kalbsfleisch (veal). Mit allem und scharf.

A Döner is Turkish, right? Do it have the same spices that most Turkish food has? SO grew up here and she said the smell from some of the food turned her stomach.

About as Turkish as a hamburger is German.

In other words, it was an original Turkish dish (kebab) that was altered to suit the German palate. I've lived in Germany and Turkey, and I found a döner to be quite different from an actual Turkish kebab in terms of spices.

Wasn't really a fan, and honestly was pretty rare you found this, at least in Baden-Württemberg and Bayern where I lived. Is it more common in the northern parts?

Damn straight.

Oh, and for OP that means "with everything (vegetables) and mustard"

It's not that hard to find in Munich, and we have it in my smaller town. I just don't like the turkey most of them use here.

But I have to say, if you're ever in Berlin, go to Curry 36 and next to it is a little trailer that sells chicken and vegetable kebaps. There will be around 50 people in line waiting, and it's worth it! Unbelievable taste.

Sorry to correct, but scharf just means spicy hot. With kebaps that usually means with chili peppers and/or tabasco sauce.

Ya, my bad. I was thinking senf (mainly because all the senf I bought was scharf of course). It's been a few years since I've had to use any German.

Ya, not doubting you or anything. It may just be where I was living. I remember seeing it in Heidelberg, but not Schweinfurt.

Hövels makes really good beer if in Dortmund area. Germany if very different as every pub/tavern typically brews their own beer, and will almost always have multiple styles. Enjoy your trip!

All I know is that there is White and Blonde.

This is what a German dude I met on the AT last year told me.

Blonde is translucent and filtered. It’s fine.

White is very cloudy and unfiltered.

White is the best.

White

Blonde
