NOLA.com — Crawfish Boil Experiment: Would You Try Artichokes? Pineapple?
I saw a few people here posting about pineapple last year, and I tried at two or three boils. It was totally worth it, and the pineapple was a hit with everyone. I was worried it might add a weird flavor to the crawfish, but I couldn't notice at all. The pineapple was just a juicy, delicious treat. Try it.

Spicy edamame, mushrooms, beets and brussels sprouts were among the clear favorites to come out of our recent seafood boil taste tests. Our seafood-boil marathon -- boiling and soaking vegetables and fruits with our crawfish -- was prompted by the dozens of you who left comments, emailed and called me when I asked this simple question: What do you put in your seafood boils besides crawfish, shrimp and crabs?
The variety was pretty astounding.
Before this experiment, my family's boils included seafood -- crawfish, shrimp or crabs – along with onions, garlic, celery, lemons, corn on the cob, new potatoes and, sometimes, sausage. That was it.
When I asked all of you, the most commonly recommended items were mushrooms, brussels sprouts and pineapple.

Edamame would be great I think, that is interesting.

I've seen people put all kinds of shite. One of my brother in laws last year experimented with chicken wings in the hot water after the crawfish were pulled. They were a rubbery terrible mess. I've tried just about everything mentioned in this thread and the only thing that was even a little memorable to me was the sweet potatoes. I don't put anything silly in any of my boils and generally think people that do that shite are just making an attempt to be "that guy".

I think I'm gonna try edamame and sweet potatoes in my next one... Thankfully, the non-Louisiana friends I boil for here in Austin don't really know if I'm doing something wonky

Have you ever done this? The actual boil time is much longer than crawfish.

my absolute favorite, and not mentioned anywhere else, is radishes. Tastes like cabbage.

quote:Yup, this is one of my favorite things. It doesn't impart flavor into the boil as some of my friends have freaked out about it when I add it. It really sucks up all the boil flavor and makes for a refreshing and juicy bite. I'll put in wedges with the skin on to be eaten ala watermelon slices.
Pineapple

Yes, do it once or twice a year

Crack eggs on side of pot and drop them in, crack just enough so seasoning can soak into the egg, cam of green beans, little smokies, chop up some Richards. May try the pineapple and sweet potatoes idea tom. Any suggestions for a nice burner, going run to good wood hardware, wish I had the money to drop on those all in one $1,200 ones

My uncle does it. I was surprised that it took so long to boil. When he does more than 3 he lets them go for almost 30 minutes.

We let a few Hershey's Bars melt in there. Gives it a great touch. You guys should try it.

It wont be worth it IMO...I did it before and they dont pick up much of the flavor. Could have been how it cooked/soaked too but the ones I split and did on the grill were better.

Fresh. Pineapples are two bucks at my local grocer right now. Cut them into wedges and toss them in whenever. They're very forgiving.

I know it good Friday but chicken breast are fire. I'm also down with any canned veggie with holes in the can

Baby corn along with green beans. Hot dogs, Chicken, breasts, pork shoulder (multi hour cook), steak, beans, macaroni. Basically anything in the freezer or pantry
all of which were cooked drunkly after we ran out of crawfish in college.
