The Ivar's thread got me thinking about this. Obviously, there are many different types of bars, including old watering holes, sports bars, bar and grills, college bars, night clubs/dance clubs, Cougar bars, country bars, etc. Of course there's lot's of overlap on those catagories.

One important factor that is often poorly understood is something I'll call "personal space". Different types of bars do better with more or less "personal space". The space between tables, bar stools, the size of the ailes between tables and the bar. Included in this perception is the sight lines and "nook spaces", and the lighting of a bar.

There have been times that I walk into a place and think it looks too crowded, even when there aren't a lot of people in there. It gives me an uncomfortable feeling, especially if the crowd is somehow different than me (younger, older, grungier, dressier, etc.) I've only been to Finn McCool's one time because of this. I just didn't get a good vibe. It seemed too dirty/crowded.

Other places seem too wide open, like you're out on a stage. This is especially true if there aren't too many people in there. Big dance clubs can feel this way if they are only half full, but seem to get a good vibe going when they get full.

Some places just seem to have a really good mix of lighting, space, sight lines, nook spaces, etc, that they are just comfortable. To me, the old Bengal on North Highland was that kind of place. A very comfortable place to be.

I think that Ivar's, for all of it's current dirtiness, high prices, and general crappiness, still has the proper balance of personal space, sight lines, and lighting for the size of the place, and I think that is what keeps attracting people to it.

Wide range of alcohol options helps as well.

So, what makes a good atmosphere, in your opinion?

the first thing I look for is the number of taps that don't say bud light, miller lite, or coors light.

this is actually a really interesting discussion because my friends and I have had this conversation many times. As a matter of fact, last fall we went to a new place marketing itself as a sports bar but we all left feeling the atmosphere was a bit off. There were tons of TVs, which is good for a sports bar, but it was really wide open, the lights were way too bright, and there was one section that actually had these big leather couches and chairs; that corner looked more like a fancy club than a sports bar. haven't been back because the feel was off.

personally, i like pub style bars. dark, real wood tables and bars is nice. i want the lighting to be medium--not bright but not club dark either. you make a good point about personal space; i don't want to be sitting on top of people but neither do i want it to feel like a warehouse. i personally want to be able to have a conversation with people at my table, so i hate overly loud music or excessive noise.

All important, and I'd put trhem in that order.

I still think people are more influenced by atmosphere than they are even aware, and they might have a hard time even explaining what about the atmosphere was good or bad.

That's a good one. I started to like Madigan's a lot more once I discovered their juke box. T

Madigan's is a good example of a place that doesn't have as good an atmosphere as it should. For those who don't know the place, it's on Carrollton in the Riverbend. It's got a long straight bar along one wall, with lots of useless floor space between it and the opposite wall. It's a corner bar, that has lots of windows along two sides, and you can look into the bar from Carrollton all the down the bar and see every patron on the bar stools.

It's a good looking place, nice exposed brick walls, good t.v's, decent pool table in the back, big wooden bar, but it's got a just too "open" feeling. Too bright. Too many people looking at you when your drinking.

I think a fun and professional bartender makes or breaks a bar. They tend to care enough to take care of the details that I deem important to my experience. Them being f-n hot as shite doesn't hurt either

My idea of a good bar has changed a lot over the last 10 years. Nowdays give me a good bartender, a good jukebox that's not too loud, most of the patrons being 25+ and I'm good to go. I like a pool table option if I'm there with some cronies.

I went to a bar by my buddies house in NO a couple months ago called Markey's. That's about perfect bar for me.

bulldog is my ideal bar I just dont go enough because I live in south BR. the only thing they could change is have more room in front of the actual bar so it would be easier to take a piss and get a beer
