We went to Brigtsens and to Emeril’s while we were in New Orleans

Our plans changed at the last minute and we were able to fit two evenings in instead of one. So we went to Brigtsens the first night and to Emeril’s the second. We also had po-boys at Domilese’s and at Mike Serio’s in the Quarter.
Both Brigtsens and Emeril’s were outstanding. At Brigtsens I had the Seafood Platter (Shell Beach Diet) and a Crawfish Cake served over a Crawfish Bisque appetizer. My wife had a Soft Shell Crab Amandine appetizer, a Shrimp Butternut Squash Bisque appetizer, and a salad.
The Seafood Platter was good, but not great. There were six items on the platter: Grilled Redfish with Crawfish & Jalapeño Lime Sauce, Crawfish Cornbread with Jalapeno Smoked Corn Butter (this was probably the best thing on the plate), Baked Oyster with Fennel, Baked Oyster LeRuth with Shrimp & Crabmeat, Sea Scallop with Fontina Cheese Grits and Fire-Roasted Vegetable Salsa, and Jalapeno Shrimp Cole Slaw. Again, good but not great.
My wife’s two appetizers, on the other hand, were great…probably as good a version of those two dishes as I have ever tasted. We shared a bottle of 2016 Hahn Chardonnay (Monterey, California) which was very good. And the pecan pie with whipped cream and caramel sauce we had for dessert was outstanding; as good as I’ve ever had!
At Emeril’s I had the Andouille Crusted Gulf Drum Fish. It was served on grilled local vegetables, shoestring potatoes, glazed pecans, and a Creole Meunière. I had this dish before, just after Katrina. They were using Redfish back then. If anything, it was even better this time. My wife had a pasta dish with mushrooms that were smoked on the premises, house made Tasso Ham, and a cream sauce with Pecorino cheese served over Angel Hair Pasta. It was incredible! My wife had a 2011 Au Bon Climat Syrah that was just okay. I had a 2016 Rías Baixas Albariño that likewise was just okay. For dessert we had the Banana Cream Pie and it was definitely as good as I remembered. As always, Emeril’s service was 10 out of 10.
For lunch we had shrimp po-boys at Domilese’s and they were great. The next day we went to Parkway for po-boys but the line was around the block. We then tried Killer po-boys in the Quarter, but they also had a long line. We settled on Mike Serios for po-boys. They were decent, but definitely not in the same league with Domilese’s and Parkway. I did get to chat with the owner while we waited for our sandwiches and that was kind of cool. We talked about the Bobby Flay Muffaletta Throwdown won by Serio’s in 2007, and he showed me a photo of Stormy Daniels on his cell phone. She came into the restaurant one day and he took a picture with her. He thinks she’s a skank, but he’s saving the photo.
Thanks everybody for your input on Brigtsens. I’m glad I went. The food was good and the service was impeccable. I’d definitely go back again.
And fwiw, I think the food was better at Emeril's, but I enjoyed Brigtsens more if that makes any sense. My wife said the same thing. Emeril's is so big. Brigtsens was a lot cozier and we both liked that.

Did you enjoy your crawfish appetizer at Brigtsen's?
My favorite things on the seafood platter are the cornbread and the two oysters dishes. I had the scallop the last time and it was good, also. The slaw was very good last time I had it. It was a shrimp boil slaw. He sent me the recipe for that, I believe. Way more complicated than I imagined. I usually don't eat a lot of the fish mainly because there's just too much food, but I have a hard time resisting ordering that meal. I'm going again in May and I'm going to "try" to go with something different.
The recipe for the shrimp butternut squash bisque is on the Brigtsen's website. I've made a few times. It's easy and excellent.
I love the smoked mushroom and tasso pasta app at Emeril's. I first had it when it was still on the menu at Commander's. I think Emeril had already left the restaurant to open his own, but it remained for a while. I went home and smoked some mushrooms to make something pretty similar. Smoked mushrooms in any kind of sauce are a grand slam. I love that flavor.
I also like the Andouille crusted drum dish at Emeril's. It's just a darn good and well executed dish.
Glad your trip was successful and you got more meals than you planned. Thanks for sharing the results!

The crawfish appetizer was superb! The server recommended it to me and I wanted to kiss her after I ate it.

Now, that's a mighty big compliment!
I've had it and it's outstanding. Frank Brigtsen does some good stuff with crawfish and with soft shell crabs when in season. I'm afraid I will miss his crawfish dishes by the end of May, sadly. You may recall that I posted to you that if he had his crawfishes dishes on the menu, you would have some hard decisions to make! I think I posted a picture of one of them either in your thread or someone else's.

I do recall that and you were right. It was so hard to choose what to order. But I have no regrets on what we ordered. I think the Shell Beach Diet plate was a good introduction for a first time diner into Frank Brigtsens cooking

I agree. I also enjoy it because it's one plate of apps and small plates pretty much. I really do love that cornbread. It's like a spoon bread and I could eat a larger serving for an entrée.
I think the Brigtsen "lineage" is also interesting. He was a Prudhomme protégé. Prudhomme was somewhat of a LeRuth protégé. Brigtsen honors the two legends with his cooking and adding his own spin. He's very pro New Orleans chefs. He's always noting various chefs on Facebook page.

quote:I did not know that. LeRuths is my all-time favorite New Orleans restaurant. I have so many great memories of that place. It was there that I had the first wine that I really loved (it was a red 1978 Montrachet burgundy) and the Crabmeat St Francis is to this day still the best appetizer I've ever had.

Emerils is a great restaurant that gets no love here.
From Parkway should have went to Bevi seafood. Serios is just ok like you said

Stadium Rat's Warren LeRuth thread is very interesting.
I'm still fascinated by Brigtsen's relationship with Prudhomme. I believe Frank started at Commander's as a dishwasher while Prudhomme was there. He eventually moved with Prudhomme to K-Paul's and honed his cooking skills. Over time, Prudhomme and his wife told Brigtsen that it was time he opened his own place and gave him some money to do so. Neat story.

Their Po Boys are legit. More than just a boiled crawfish spot.

Same. Plus it's uptown which keeps the crowd pretty local compared to Parkway (less crowded). I also live uptown so there's that
