Please provide evidence.

I've heard they are comparable. I've never heard anyone saying it was "better" (also haven't heard anyone saying it wasn't as good). I just got a surprise check in the mail and was waiting until winter, but drove and viewed a few yesterday and may pull the trigger sooner than later. Was leaning cheaper, but the large green egg is right in my wheelhouse and I like the warranty factor. Don't want most of the accessories since I'll be making a table, so the KJ doesn't stand out there since it's the same price if not a little more (just includes accessories). Only thing I want is the plate setter. And that can be had relatively inexpensively.

Sorry to hijack, but truly wondering how the KJ is "much better". Only one I've really heard stand out is the larger oval primo due to size, and I don't need that size, so that's lost on me.

So i have the 2017 KJ and I think it is better based on price comparison point. I did a bunch of research on the egg vs. KJ vs. Primo. I didn't care for the oval shape so it was really down to the KJ vs. the egg. As far as performance, they are the same. You can smoke and grill the same. So that is a wash. What got me was the price vs. what i was getting with it.
The accessories that you are getting with the KJ you NEED. IT's not like some extras you'll never use. Here is the benefit of the new 2017 KJ over the egg.

Price
- KJ is about $100 - 200 less expensive than the egg.
Accessories
- with that price point, the new KJ's have the nomex/stainless steel oven gaskets as opposed to the felt/neoprene gaskets that need replacing yearly.
- The new KJ's also have a divided fire box, as opposed to the all in one firebox in an egg. There have been reports of the previous fireboxes cracking. Having the firebox divided into sections allows for expansion/contraction and prevents the firebox from cracking.
- The new KJ's also have a spring assist hood, and Eggs do not. This means that you can easily lift the lid and even let it sit slightly open if you needed to do so. Eggs do not have this feature.
- The KJ's include the indirect heat plates, whereas the eggs, you have to buy the plate separate which is easily another $100 if not more.
- New KJ's have a sliding vent cap at the top, as opposed to the old daisy wheel vent cap. Not sure what greater benefit it does, other than look nicer and allow more adjustments.
- This one is minor, but the multi level grate holder is very handy. With that you can cook direct, direct but raised, or throw in the heat deflector for additional options. Don't believe the egg has this feature.

I bought my KJ because my brother in law had an egg and saw how awesome it was. When i went shopper's choice to check them all out, seeing the upgrades on the new KJ is what sold me. The salesman even said he felt bad for selling some the older model KJ's because as soon as the new ones' came in, he saw how much more improved they were.
After using my KJ, i like mine more than his egg. But make sure you buy the 2017 model KJ.

I could just be overlooking what the actual sales price is vs. what I see MSRP online. My local store is selling the large (18") BGE for $850. The 18" KJ is 1200. Yes, it includes the stand, tables, etc, but again, I only really need the place setter and you can get those for $70 on Amazon. Firebox may crack, but my local shop said if I show up with a picture of the cracked part, they'd give me a new one. And the crack really doesn't affect that part. I like the removable vent caps on the BGE for better storage. The daisy wheel seems like it is older, but I like that it's easily changeable if it gets worn, and I like the cap that quickly puts out the coals. If the KJ regular cap seals that tightly, it's pretty much a wash.

I do admit the lid assist would be nice as my 3 year old slammed one shut in the store (thought I was going to have to buy an XL with a cracked lid right then and there when I heard it close ). The split grill may be nice, but there are obviously other accessories which allow you to do that on the BGE for ~70 bucks. Even buying these extra accessories, I lower than the prices I'm seeing for the KJ. My Ace Hardware will have me out the door with everything the KJ has for $1221 with tax.....again, I don't want most of it, so I expect to be spending less.

I don't think that is apples to apples. When i was searching online i saw eggs for around that price but after further investigation the egg was missing some stuff.

Well, i guess that's up to you if you want to go through that.

The new KJ's have this too.

New KJ's have a sliding vent as opposed to the old daisy wheel design.

Again, with the new cap design of the KJ, you dont need a cap. Just close off the vents.

Again, thats extra cost.

Well if you can really get the large egg for that price then go for it. In BR, the price points were comparable with KJ being cheaper due to not having to buy the accessories.

Go to the KJ website and check out the new design. LINK

Has a picture of everything i talked about.

Very nice.

I ended up getting this. I didn't get it, it was given to me.

The more I've read and seen quotes like this on eggheadforum, the more I'm happy about it.

quote:

February 2016 edited February 2016 If something ever happens to my BGE I will be buying a Vision or whatever that is instead of another BGE as long as all my accessories will fit and work with it. BGE should be ashamed that they dont offer all of the features of a Vision grill for 3 to 4 hundred dollars more. Love the BGE but the more I see of those Visions, the more I get pissed about not shopping around and falling for the big brand name.

After pricing all the cedar, wheels, towel racks, cabinet accessories, towel racks, volcano stone, gloves, etc, you can have it all set up and running for just over $1,000. If you're not going to spend $2k on the egg and all that goes with it, this does the same job.

I've got the B series. Not sure what the difference is between that and the pic I found on the bge forum. But these are the specs for it:

Construction: Heavy duty ceramic exterior body and fire bowl
2-Tiered Cooking Grates (sq. in.): 604 square inch stainless steel dual flip grates with handles for ease of adding charcoal and smoking wood chunks
Grill/Smoker Fuel Type: Charcoal — lump charcoal always recommended
Thermometer: Easy-to-read thermometer with cooking temperature zones
Bottom Draft Vent: Calibrated stainless steel slider with safety spark screen
Top Draft Vent: Calibrated cast iron draft vent with Bakelite tab
Cooking Space: 18 7/8? diameter of bottom grate, 18 1/8? top cooking grate
Cover: Heavy duty branded vinyl cape style cover with easy velcro closure for easy on/off
Assembled Depth (in.): 28.8 in
Assembled Height (in.): 47.0 in
Assembled Width (in.): 22.5 in (52 in. with side shelves extended)
Weight: 196 lbs (89 kgs)
Assembly Required: 15-20 minutes (All assembly tools included)
Manufacturer Warranty: Limited lifetime for all ceramic parts, 5 years for all metal parts, 1 year for cover, thermometer and gaskets, 90 days for side shelves and bakelite tab. This warranty is not transferable to subsequent owners.

So I ended up getting the egg yesterday. Stopped and looked at the KJ first. It was 1200. My local Ace Hardware had the Large BGE and would throw in everything the KJ had except for the side tables for 1200. Only thing I got was the plate setter. Place is actually giving me a nest for a few weeks to use until my table is built. Has nothing to do with BGE, but that kind of stuff made it more comfortable to buy from these guys.

I agree the KJ and Vision were nice (although I did like the older vision more than thew new with new "fancy" bottom vents). KJ probably had a few more features, but not quite enough to put it over the service at the local store. Went in twice and those guys bent over backwards for me and really made me feel comfortable compared to dropping that kind of money at the big box stores.

Good deal man. Like i said, they all cook the same, i just liked the features of the KJ better, especially the gasket and firebox. Happy smoking/grilling/baking!

What is your table setup going to look like?

Egg center, right/left?

Left. Where I'll be putting it, I only have ~48" and putting it center would take away too much space. I'm right handed plus trying to keep it away from the house made the left work out best.

Stolen from a thread I made looking for ideas on the OB, but what I had in my head looks pretty much like this, except pit to the left, and might use 2x4's instead of 4x4's for the legs. It also won't look that good.....

If that's cedar, and you use 2X4's instead of the 4x4's, it'll save ya about $50-60.

I wanted this one until I priced all the cypress,

I'm going to build what's there, minus the arbor type thing over it. That's another couple hundred, using my neighbor's radial arm table saw, and another 6-8 hours of work.

Oooh, downvotes are coming.

I really like the table portion of this... the completely unnecessary pergola/trellis thing is dumb.

I agree. It looks nice, but serves no purpose.

You can get tons of videos from the Kamado Joe website. I feel like you didn't even try to look for videos before starting this thread.

I have a BGE but the below should be applicable to KJs too I think

You mentioned the Looflighter. It gets mixed reviews. I've used one for about 5-10 cooks and have enjoyed it. But people say they just randomly die, so we'll see. Before that I used an electric charcoal starter, which was fine, just slower (and I killed several of them).

Two recent upgrades - getting a Kick Ash Basket to improve airflow and help cleanup, and getting a Smokeware chimney cap. I'd highly recommend both.

Where I bought mine those lighters come with a long warranty. If it breaks they just give you a new one no questions asked.
