While I prefer to buy my cow from Calandro's, Maxwell's, or a bona fide meat market, I've never had a problem with meat from Wal-Mart.

If I'm cooking for a lot of people, there's no way I'm paying Calandro's prices to feed them.

I will say I've had more bad $15/lb steaks from Calandro's than I've had $4.99 steaks from Wal-Mart.

I was a meat cutter for Wal Mart back when they cut meat in the stores. Meat could be cut, packed, and sold until the packaged date on box was less than 90 days and the vacuum seal was still good. The beef and pork they sell now is injected with a brine and packaged in a gas flushed packaging to keep it fresher.

this!

its disgusting. absolutely disgusting and i've given it several tries so anyone who says walmart meat is the same as from other places is completely wrong. the 'average' ribeyes i buy at kroger are in another class from walmart. in fact not only 'could' i eat these 52 weeks out of every year..i DO.

I try to avoid buying beef at Wal-mart, but I haven't had any horrible experiences. Chicken seems about the same as everyplace else.

Pork is where I'm picky...I won't buy it at Wal-mart, Albertson's or Target because they usually have the "injected with flavor solution" crap--either John Morrell or Hormel? I can definitely taste the difference.

As someone mentioned above, Sam's seems to have good quality meat, and normal pork. Local Associated Grocers stores (Matherne's/Hi-Nabor) usually have better meat/pork also, and they're sale prices are usually much better than Wal-mart regular prices.

i just realized i told a BIG FAT LIE.

i always buy my brisket/packers from walmart and pork butts (they're hormel i think) and never had a problem.

could be that i'm smoking the damn brisket for 20 hours sometimes and that can make anything taste good or maybe these are handled differently. the packaging on the whole brisket looks the same whether i buy it from kroger, walmart or super-target..so i'm not sure walmart does anything different to these cuts.

i was referring to steaks or other meat that you lightly grill (or at least i do) and i expect the meat flavor to carry it.

that brine crap walmart soaks their steaks in completely destroys the cut of meat.

ETA i took first place in a BBQ competition with walmart brisket over 34 other teams so clearly it wasn't too awful.
