Bought a can today to re-acquaint myself with them. Just exactly like I remembered, really awful eaten straight out of the can. But what should you expect for .69 cents? Is there anything that can be done to make these more palatable? The Hot & Spicy version I had today was neither hot or spicy.

Not since I was 10. I would try them again if I went to jail.

why would you WANT to make something like that taste better. They are terrible for you so why subject yourself to it

Those things got me through college. BBQ flavored ones were almost a delicacy at times. Those, and sardines.

Go fishing on a boat at about 6am. Start drinking beer around 930am. Come 1pm, those things are money.

THIS

As nasty as those things are, vieanna sausage and sardines become a delicacy at about noon when you've been up since 3am, have a hangover, and are starving to death. Saltine crackers are a necessary side item

This is how I ate them. Didn't hide the mushy texture when chewing. That's the thing about them, the texture. Besides looking completely unappealing. Would they be better heated? The can even suggests to add them to your favorite recipe. I can't imagine anything they would make better.

Added them to baked beans once as an anti-starvation measure. The texture is much worse when warm.

To poster who says saltines are not necessary, how do you get the sardines out the can without them???

I liked the BBQ when I was a kid but they do need crackers to get beyond that mushy texture.

I have hunted and fished all my life and never eaten a Vienna sausage. I just always found better snacks at the store.

I ate those all the time as a kid. I went to a place on the West Bank that served a Vienna sausage poboy. It was fantastic and the guy that brought me there is worth about 100i million and an LSU alum

I love them. The jalapeño sausages on a fresh saltine are nectar of the Gods.
