I love me some sweet cornbread. Makes a great cornbread dressing too.

There are popular pre-mixes in stores that have added sugar in order to give it an actual sweet taste. Some fools have homemade recipes that do the same.
There is no reason to add any type of sweetener to the batter before baking. Now if someone wants to eat their baked cornbread with honey or syrup, that's fine, I guess. Otherwise, it's an abomination.

This is what I assume most people are talking about when they say sweet cornbread.

No, I think they were referring to baked cornbread actually being sweet. There are recipes that do that. I don't like them. As I said, if you look at some of the popular mixes in the market, you can see that some of them have added sugar.

If your cornbread was too dry, it is easily improved by an extra egg in the batter plus more butter or bacon grease. A good skillet cornbread is a fine thing, but too many recipes are borderline terrible.
