I stopped at the liquor store to buy a bottle of scotch for a buddy. Someone came over and help me and I told them I am looking for a $50 or so bottle of scotch for a birthday present. He pointed me straight to this bottle and said this is better than most $50 bottles of scotch I’d recommend you get this. Is he right? If not what do you recommend?

I've had a bottle or two of it and it isn't bad. Probably about the cheapest 12-year-old single malt that you will find.
Glenmorangie Original probably isn't much more and is a milder scotch, if you think he would prefer that.
If you gave me either one, I would say thank you and offer you a wee dram.

Calandros?
They always try to pawn their stock of it off.
It’s fine. Nothing special.
It may be too well-known For some, but there’s a reason, Macallan 12yr sherry cask is fantastic to this day.

I don't know where you are, but if you are in a state where alcohol sales are not run by the state, look around. Scotch prices can vary a good bit.
In Atlanta, a bottle of Lagavulin typically goes for around $100. I have found it as cheap as $52 in Maryland. Florida can have some good deals too.
Often I can find Laphroaig 10 for around $50, which is a good deal, if you like Isleys. Sometimes Brunnahabhain can be found in the mid $40s.

I like it for a real cheap decent scotch.
