Tipping when you pay upfront?

We went to Voodoo BBQ in Denham this weekend and I was caught a little off guard. You place your order in a cafeteria style line and pay for your food right then and there. My issue was that when she printed the c/c receipt it has a line for tips. Is this just a standard receipt or are they really expecting you to tip right then? And based on what exactly? You fill your own drinks, get your own condiments and silverware, they only bring your tray to your table when it's ready.
By the way, food was very good. Pulled pork has a wonderful flavor to it and the corn pudding was awesome.
I did leave a small tip for whomever came to clean the table afterward.

It's the standard receipt printed at restaurants. I usually draw a line through it.

Several of the Piccadilly restaurants around town now do this.

It's the same concept as getting coffee at PJ's or wherever when you see the tip jar at the counter.

It's sort of a pain in the arse how they make you pay in the cafeteria line now.

That's what I did, was just wondering if that was the reason no one ever came by our table to check on us. Being it was our first time, maybe that is how they operate, by leaving you alone.

This.
New Orleans seafood and hamburger Co. is like this. Except the wait staff actually bring your food, fill your drinks etc. So I felt like I owed a tip but the receipt does NOT have a place for it.
Sucks for the staff when out of towners don't have cash.

I've always wondered about this at George's and Brewbachers...you pay up front, you have to get up later and retrieve your food, they never bring you anything. But, both places expect tips...

I managed a couple of McAllisters for about 6 years out of college and we didn't have a tip line on the receipt and did not expect one at the table. We paid our "front staff" full wage instead of server wage and if tips we left, we put them in a "party fund" and once a year the staff voted on a local charity to give half to, and then we threw a party (usually New Years or Halloween) with the other half.

Well, speak of the devil...
Thought you'd find this particularly interesting.
Tip Stealing
Honestly, I doubt I'll go back even for the sweet tea after reading this.

I agree. I don't mind tipping, but I am not going to tip in advance of services rendered.
I have to believe that many of the waitresses are now getting stiffed because many people today don't carry cash like they used to.

You mean because people fail to notice the "TIP" line on the itemized credit card receipt?

Hmmm. fricking idiots in management. I hope they get their asses handed to them. I worked for a franchisee in another part of the state (that's all I have to say about that) and we did shite straight up. When we hired kids, we explained the policy, kept the tip jar out in plain sight, and I fired more than one hourly (and 1 mgr) for even touching that jar without permission. There was no tip line on CC receipts either, so it was all cash.
It was fun for my crew. We'd close an hour early one night in December, myself and the other mgrs would provide a list of 5 local charities, we'd do round robin voting and end up with one to split the money with. We'd have a few girls count it up, put it in a bag and the following weekend, we'd do a public donation thing and make a big deal about it in the paper etc. It was really good for business and employee morale.
I HATE reading about stupid assholes in mgmt fricking kids like that. I hope they get arrested and sentenced to a year in a federal pound-me-in-the-arse prison. Douches.

It had to be fairly significant amounts if it's turned into the beginnings of a class action suit.
At least McAlister's recently started using plates when dining in, which is a hell of a lot more environmentally friendly than serving everything in plastic or styrofoam.

Just draw a line through the tip area, total and sign the recipt...I usually leave a few dollars on the table for the girl that brings my food....The DS voodoo was all over my table when we went....everyone stopped by to ask how everything was and if we needed anything....you know...the grand opening rush.

I'm sure it was. Our tip jar would routinely get up to 4 or 5K in a year. In fact, after the public caught on, we'd have people give money as tips on purpose knowing half would go to charity. I would make change in the tip jar and put alot of it in the safe to keep the total in the jar down to discourage someone from stealing it. If they were doing this for years, the total could be in the low 5 figures. Bunch of scum.

The only cafeteria-style place I can think of that I go to is La Madeline and I don't tip there.. but come to think of it I don't think the receipt even has a line for it.
I'd assume it's just the standard receipt.
ETA: I do feel like I should be tipping for the person who cleans off my table, but every time I go to La Madeline, I see tables with stuff on them for long periods of time. Last week, we had to clean off a table on our own just to sit there. I recognize it's busy and they don't have a plethora of "bus boys" but I don't feel comfortable leaving a tip on the table at a place where customers frequently have to clean off a table for themselves.

it's just a standard credit card machine. just leave the tip at the table when you leave.

Didn't Starbucks get hammered a while back because managers were pulling a portion of the the tips and a group of employees sued?
