Not the cheap baztad reason for the question, but really want to know how some of these tippers think. I usually tip the 20+ on total, regardless of wine for the exact reason doc stated.

Ah, the ever popular "servers are just lowly servants, and thus we should cap their wages."

In a high end restaurant, why shouldn't a server, who by the very nature of their employment at a finer establishment, is likely one of the best in their profession, be afforded the opportunity to make a lot of money?

If someone has worked in the restaurant business for several years (20 years+ in many cases), this is their living, and they work hard to make your experience perfect. Think about it that way: they aren't just taking your order, they are making sure that your night, at their place of business, is memorable in a very positive way. We aren't talking about the college-aged waitstaff at Buffalo Wild Wings here.

I cannot stand people who quibble over a few dollars when you've already spent hundreds. It's petty, cheap, and low-class.

Don't know why except when you're challenged by someone paying the bill?

because i dont like people telling me that i must tip a certain amount and that i should not frequent an establishment if i do not tip that amount

the entitlement of the statement and suggestion is sickening

Yeah it's a legitimate question, and honestly opinions vary, especially in towns such as BR where there really aren't many ultra wealthy.

The truth is most people in higher end restaurants /bars just tip 20% across the board due to not really knowing what might be considered "proper". With that being said, 20% is standard enough and it works for everybody.

Not to be a tool, but people tell you what to do all day long. They are called "rules to live by", and the tipping is a common-place rule. And sorry to add, but if you don't like it, don't dine there.

I don't think anyone said that at all. It was just insinuated that if you cannot AFFORD to tip appropriately on an expensive meal, then PERHAPS you should reconsider eating that expensive meal. You can eat wherever you want, tip whatever you want, etc. But don't quibble over $5 if you've already spend $250. As if that $5 is going to break you, but the first $250 didn't.

And don't act all principled about it either, unless you consider being a cheap person "principled."

I really dont ever see the lure in buying anything more than a glass of wine at dinner. I go out for dinner separatly from going out for drinks. Id much rather spend 85 on food than 25 ounces of wine. So I never really run into the problem of tipping on wine. When I do get drinks its mainly if there is a long wait like at Louisiana Lagniappe and I always bring my drink to the table. No Im not going to tip the server for a drink I paid for at the bar and tipped the bartender already for.

How many people here make sure the tip is in cash?

It's not "entitlement". It actually means
To Insure Prompt Service.
Should actually be given prior to the bill being presented. And standard tip is customary at @ 15% for most service. Great service>15%.

Just walk away. He sees his point of view and that point only. He doesn't want to be convinced of anything else, so there really is no point in continuing discussion with him.

Rouge...why the hate? It's the holiday season.
I did just get back from my walk, though.
You stick your tip in there or not. No worries on my bill here.
