1. Tip is not, nor ever has been, an acronym
2. Learn the difference between ensure and insure

And if you are Patrick_Bateman it looks like this:
Look, dude. I don't know what your fricking problem is, but don't make it a personal attack on me. . . So, I don't tip 20% for mediocre/bad service? If that makes me cheap, then so be it. If the service is good/great, I'll tip 18-20%, or more. But the whole "automatic 20% no matter what" thing isn't for me.
ETA: One thing that really ticks me off in a nice restaurant is having to ask for a refill, or having to flag down my waiter to get his attention (rather than him frequenting my table as he should). Things like that cut into the 20%.

link?
ETA:
1999-2002 average tip amount is 13.57 to 14.69%
1991-1992 average tip amount is 14.29 to 14.4%
you must use Bush's "fuzzy math" definition of double

Tipping Debate
Pre-tax or post?
That's really a debate???

this is all based on percentages
if price of goods goes up, then tips based on standard percentage go up to
in short, inflation has zero to do with your point

This is true.

Wrong-first and foremost-inflation effects the cost of food-so yes it does effect total dollars spent. Secondly, tips aren't based only on food cost, you dolt-they are based on service. As with any industry, dining (fine dining in particular) gets more refined with over time the total cost of doing business goes up. As the consumers expectations go up for service(mostly due to an increase of wealth and status-the same reason they are dining out in the first place) the price of service goes up.
Tipping is only there to keep the cost of business down for the owner and pass along to the consumer. So yes, inflation has influenced tipping percentages.

This isn't what you said, pal. You said that above a certain threshold, you hit a "flat rate" for tipping. I was merely poking fun at you for it. It seems silly, that's all.
Sure, if the service is bad, don't tip 20%, but don't screw over your waiter just because you believe there should be a salary cap.
