We were not super hungry but wanted a great, semi light dinner we could enjoy without feeling like shite afterwards. We were like the little old couple, sharing our dinner.
At the Thorny Oyster, you can sit at the “chef counter”, watch them cook, etc., so we asked the chef if they could make us one dish “off the menu”. Just so happened, the head chef (and owner) was working, and he was super happy to do something.

Here’s what we had:

Smoked brisket tamales

Pasta Bordelaise

(Off the menu) Grilled avocado & bacon salad with a poached egg under the avocado

Key lime pie (but it was more of a custard with crème brûlée)

This was one of the best dinners we’ve had in a couple years, it was amazing. We get the bill and the “off the menu” item was only $25. The entire meal was $110. I was surprised. We did tip the chef on top of the normal tip to the server.
I was expecting the “off the menu” item was going to be $50+ alone. The server jokingly said he was glad we sat were we did, because if he walked through the restaurant with that dish, everyone would have wanted it.

We didn’t know what we were getting until it was served, that’s why I was expecting $50+ for the one dish. It was amazing, and even though it was only an avocado salad, I wouldn’t have been mad because we asked for off the menu item, and it was amazing.

The dish was actually a creation made by the sous chef. She said she came up with it when she worked at the Beau Rivage casino.

Looks good to me.

There is some nice food at that end of the beach.

I guess at the other end, too.

We split these four dishes. I was still pretty full when we left. No way I could have ate these by myself.

Ox Lot was a big loss for Covington and especially the Southern Hotel.

I just found out tonight that he came from the Southern Hotel. I wish I had known that, he is a friend of my sister/BIL.

Those smoked brisket tacos look SO good! As does everything else, but I’d be happy with plate number 1.
