Brandt's maybe fits the bill? haven't been yet though)
I have been to Brandts twice and will never go back. the place is shite.
i remember having the soup of the day and couldnt finish it with hot sauce.
I got a steak with some sort of bourbon orange glaze and it tasted like it was boiled in water. Little flavor and very tough.
My SO got something that was decent and pretty good, but nothing compaired to other fine dinning restaraunts.
its unbelivable that they claim to the the only 5 star restaraunt in BR. I wouldnt give them 3 stars.

Isn't Justin at stroubes the guy leaving to be the chef at superiors new seafood joint on st. Charles in nola??
Posted on 1/17/11 at 11:59 pm to TheEnglishman
Who is rating br restaurants with stats. I have to see this one.
Posted on 1/18/11 at 12:08 am to Tiger Attorney
Yep. Sure enough. Justin ferguson of stroubes is leaving to be the head chef at superiors new seafood joint in nola.
It took four pages of this thread to come up with one hotshot, somewhat inventive chef in br and he is leaving to be the chef at a restaurant that probably won't be one of the top 5 restaurants to open in nola in 2011.
I'm not trying to be a dick but BR has problems in this department. There really is no denying it. But I'm sure I will be the a-hole for pointing this out.

yeah, people leaving BR for more presumably more money. That happens in every industry. Sucks that he is leaving, but I don't see how that proves anything about BR restaurants. Like was stated earlier, Nola has more restaurants than most cities it's size, but so does BR. Considering how far BR has come since 2005 with it's boost in size I think it is short sighted to not take a fresh look.

I have taken a fresh look up there. There is nothing exciting going on up in BR...nothing...
Stroube's has been the most exciting addition recently...it was good...slightly ambitious...now the chef is leaving...
You may not believe this, but there are much more exciting restaurants opening in Jackson...
They are chef owned, seasonal-menu driven...with a creative flair rooted in a mix of Southern/Delta food and New Orleans food.
Look up places like Mint, Walkers, Nick's, Julep, Char, and The Parlor...
The last is a modern, gourmet take on Southern and Soul Cuisines...they specialize in LA and MS spirits and beers. They are located in the heart of a downtown that is trying to comeback. Meanwhile another sushi joint opened up in BR.

I live in BR and occasionally work out of our downtown Jackson office, so I have a bit of a dog in this hunt.
Not so much a war zone as a region in transition, ready to either completely devolve into Detroit_on_the_Pearl or be revitalized. Congrats to the folks brave enough to bet on the latter. Yeah, there may be some losses (witness the short-lived BBQ place on Pearl), but TA's tip shows new folks keep trying.
So TA, got any other eating tips for downtown JAN?

Their downtown is trying to comeback just like BR's....the two cities are similar in many ways.
Jackson and BR have a shite-ton of problems.
However, speaking only of food since we are on a food board, Jackson's restaurant scene is exciting for its size. This is not unique in MS...the Delta and Oxford have more exciting and better places than I have eaten in BR.

well TA, it isn't Nola, that's for sure.
FWIW, if the same sous chef is still at Stroube's and gets promoted maybe the ambition will still be there. From what I understand he has a decent background.
also, in my opinion problem doesn't lie with the restaurants it lies with the residents. For the same reasons we don't need an aquarium or Kip-land type atmosphere we don't need the same restaurant scene as Nola.
I know you will disagree with this enormously because it is your style, but BR being 45 minutes away from Nola is the reason a lot of those restaurants are still open today. Not many have the resources to eat out on the high end more than a few times a year and when they do driving 45 minutes to Nola isn't that big of a deal. If there were more top end restaurants in BR it would suddenly allow them more disposable income, but if Nola wasn't 45 minutes down the road it would make them keep their money in BR and thus cause more of the type of restaurants to be open.

Yeh, buddy...
downtown has a kiefer's, which is great...there is also a great farmer's market in downtown Jackson on Sat mornings...the Mayflower is good...the Parlor is right by it. Can you make it up to Fondren or Highland Mall area (I know those areas better.
Your assessment of downtown Jackson is dead on. BR and Jackson are almost mirroring each other in development. I have watched both closely (not as closely as I am watching the re-urbanization of NOLA, of course). Here is what I will say about both cities...they are both experience private developement downtown and still outward in the suburban sprawl. The more these cities focus development downtown or close to it with tx incentives, etc...the better that city will do long term. Also, the city government must help with public dollars used wisely (i.e. look what the paving and lighting of Oak St. did in NOLA...best use of $800,000 I have seen in my lifetime...transformed the neighborhood).

There is no desire it appears to create an ambitious restaurant scene in BR unfortunately. It seems that most are content dining in the 3.5 star scene when dining out in BR. We do have plenty of very good options that it seems are often overlooked when people say we don't have any good chefs here.
Galatoire's Bistro(former sous chef from NOLA location)
Stroube's
Brandt's
Maison Lacour
Latil's
These suffice and are very good at what they do. But like FightinTigers said, when the ambitious food eaters want a good meal and/or to celebrate we get in the car and we make a short drive down to New Orleans, and don't think twice about it. Most of my family and friends do this several times a year. This definitely has a direct effect on the high end BR restaurant scene. I have no problem with that whatsover. I have endless options for dining within an hour drive of my house.

Definitely "ambitious" with a lot of his specials.
I think when chefs see BR can support more restaurants they will go with it. Kind of hard to ask anyone to start a restaurant in a city that has no real social center such as St Charles and the quarter.
