The Best Cook in the World: Tales from my Momma’s Table
Rick Bragg’s new book and since he reads all his own books the audiobook is really worth listening to. Anyone here who reads him will know. Those who don’t he is a Pulitzer Prize winning former New York Times, among other papers, writer.
His books about his mother, grandmother and family are very well done that I believe a lot on this board would enjoy. This one in particular is stories and recipes about his mother’s old southern country cooking. Pinto beans, cornbread, butter rolls, fried tomatos, sausage gravy and biscuits...he’s got it all.
Give it a shot. I’m almost done. He also writes the rear cover column for each months Southern Living. He’s an Alabama guy who started out covering Bear Bryant but in his book All Over But The Shoutin he describes the few years living in, reporting from and eating his way around New Orleans.

His description of Ava, his grandmother learning to cook as a 16 year old bride by father in law Jimmy Jim is priceless. If I remember correctly Jimmy Jim was the one that got in the fight with the big man and bit his finger off? Then the wife threw it to the chickens. That was in Ava’s Man. Those Scots Irish coming out of Appalachia were and are a tough breed.
And man the book can make you hungry.

An audio cookbook? How functional.

Apparently you have never read or listened to the author. Just stick to your Betty Crocker Cookbook lest you strain your brain.
You don’t seem like the type to enjoy chicken roasted in cider with carrots, turnips and onions.

I just finished the hardcover. Reminded me of my grandmother and her depression era cooking. Each dish held a family story.
It's almost a biography, but it's going on the cookbook shelf in the kitchen.
