Thanks for posting the recipe and pics. It's interesting that there are so many variations on a dish in a small geographic area.

In botany, a wide variety of closely related species in a small geographic area is considered an indicator of the length of time those species have been evolving away from a common ancestor. The same patterns happen in culture: you get the greatest micro variations in practices when people do something often...it evolves through sheer repetition. The things that don’t evolve are often rituals performed symbolically and infrequently (performance vs everyday practice)

IOW, if everyone is making gumbo all the time, you’re gonna get a wide range of how-to. Whereas, if it’s a special occasion dish that must be made in a proper/ritual fashion, it doesn’t change as quickly.

Sorry, I just can't wrap my head around this. I'm sure it tastes good for what it is, but in my mind, it's not a gumbo.

Cute bowls. Agree with the browning sauce. I don’t care for light colored gravies.

Used to eat the same gumbo with yellow rice growing up in Houma. Always thought it was good. Some good
Cooks down there even tho they don’t get the publicity other places do.

I'm in Lafourche Parish and I've always heard this called dishwater gumbo. What puzzles me the most is earlier in the thread it was noted that this is how it's always done here and in Terrebonne Parish. I'm like Nicki Parrish...I'm over 50 and I don't know anybody who makes it like this. Lol.

It's probably good. No idea how prevalent it is. But that's not "gumbo" as I is usually understood.

I would be disappointed to be served that in the name of "gumbo."
