First

You're going to need a pair of these.

Then let's talk.

What are you wanting to cook? Answers are going to vary based on that

But really, get one of these. "Hardest" part is heating the charcoal. This makes it impossible to mess up.
and you dont get the lighter fluid smell taste...

Looking to cook everything: steaks, burgers, sausage, and chicken but don't want to give myself food poisoning.

Sorry about the grilling/BBQ mix up guys

Don't do this. Spend ten bucks on a chimney starter.

Lighter fluid is fine despite what some may tell you. However you have to let it cook off and let the charcoal cook down. When people say the food tastes like lighter fluid is because they spray an already going fire and throw food on it.

As said, get a charcoal chimney. Lighter fluid is so useless with or without a chimney.

And don’t buy the briquettes with the lighter fluid already in them

Alright baws, just bought my first charcoal grill. I've never grilled before and was never taught about BBQing.

I'd like tips on getting coals ready. I suck at this part. Do i need a little chimney (Coal starter)?

Got my answer. thanks for starting this, OP.

My dad never used a chimney but I can NOT reproduce his method of stacking coals in a corner and shite.

Yeah it sounds like OP is looking to just get into the hobby.

I bought an egg like 7 months ago and it’s been a rabbit hole I’ve gone down in terms of accessories and different kinds of cooks. They are a lot of fun, but if you’re a beginner it would be definite overkill.

Use lump charcoal. Only put charcoal on half the grill, not on the whole thing. You want hot and cold sides. That’s about it really.

Edit: oh yeah use a charcoal chimney
