There's a Taco Tico on Veterans that has been there probably since before I was born . Haven't been there in ages so I'm not sure if they're better than Taco Bell; plus they don't stay open that late and you have to go inside to order/no drive-thru. The parking lot needs to be repaved badly.
Yeah, I don't get out to that part of Veteran's too often, but it looks, um, unclean.
Now, I have to admit that I did eat at a Taco Tico that was located on the corner of Robert E. Lee and Elysian Fields, back in the late 80's. If I recall, I just got the generic hard tacos, and I think I remember liking them, but I was probably drunk, so I wouldn't put too much stock in that!

That area is slowly getting better.
They are renovating that old funeral home. Looks like condos maybe?
They just built that new auto zone.
The save alot shopping center is nicer.
The strip mall by the interstate w/ athlete's foot isn't bad.
There are just some empty lots/vacant buildings that need development and a few shitty check cashing type places that need to be removed.

I think I ate Taco Tico before there was Taco Bell in New Orleans.

It still feels like it's only the fragile beginnings of a come back. I hope it does continue to get better and better. The dysfunctionals need to decide if they want to sustain this trend, or if will they shite on it again.
Poor management
Graffitti
Robberies and other crime
Crappy worker attitudes
Trash in the streets and sidewalks
Unkept properties
etc.
Can it get better? I hope so!

FTR, there has been a Taco Bell in the Tulane dining area for a number of years now.
It was replaced by a Baja Fresh about a year ago
