Specs vs. Total Wine - Houston
Posted by Cash on 1/14/19 at 11:39 am00
Who has the best craft beer selection?

Between the ones close to me, Total Wine.
Specs on Smith is comparable to Total Wine. Maybe even better.
But your average neighborhood specs isn't. And total wine's mix and match beer wall is amazing. It's been a game changer for me since it opened in Pearland.

you will probably find what you are looking for at HEB. they have stepped up their inventory to keep up with whole foods
total wine is more wine than anything, but it will probably be about the same selection as specs

I’ll be on the north side near the Total Wine on Cypress Creek (AKA FM 1960)
In this order:
HEB Vintage SEC SH 249/Louetta (no more growler fills)
Whole Foods Champions-SEC Louetta/Cutten (they also do growler fills and have a bar area)
Total Wine-FM 1960 across from Willowbrook Mall. I found they have a decent selection but it seems to disorganized and have some out-of-date beers.
The best Specs in the area is SEC SH 249/Spring Cypress. The one on Cutten/FM 1960 next to Target sucks for beer selection.
11 Below is a decent brewery just off Cutten Road on Bourgeois. Nothing mind blowing but they have some "consistent" beers.
Depending on when you'll be up here Parish brewing is doing their Houston launch this week. Thistle Draft on FM 2920 will be hosting Wednesday 1-16. That's an easy 20 minute drive from FM 1960.

Louie: I personally wouldn't take the drive there unless you're looking for something very specific and call ahead.
I don't know much about the Woodlands beer scene but the HEB next to the mall has a good beer selection (as you probably know).
I've heard nothing but good things about the Whole Foods in the Woodlands also.

Appreciate the info.
I only work in The Woodlands but live inner-loop, so I visit Specs Smith St, D&Q, Craft Beer Cellar, & Post Oak WF regularly.
I might have to do Thistle for lunch tomorrow.

TW generally doesn’t have good turn over and has a bunch shelf aged IPAs. Smith St Specs has freshies, but not all Specs are made equal. HEB in Montrose is solid. D&Q also great too, but a little pricy.
^ pretty much nailed it. Total wine is ok for beer. Been pretty hit or miss in my experience
D&Q and smith street are the go to.
D and Q’s ipas will turd too but their stout and sour selection is top of the line. Taco truck ain’t bad either

West Grand Parkway South Total Wine in Richmond/Fulshear is the best store I've seen. Try to stop twice a month just to look around. I used to be a Specs Homer but the game has passed them by. TW is where I go for everything. They don't hold back on beer or liquor special releases, they just put it on the shelf.

Well then I need to stop off over there. That’s the one near Cinco, right?
Central Market HEB on Westheimer is pretty darn good for beer selection as well.

I guess I need to give them another shot. There is just 3 specs closer to me than the nearest TW. The TW on bellaire is more wine/booze focused
