Thinking of buying one. Do you have one, how often do you use it, how long do the cartridges last?

We do. It sucks as an alternative to soda you drink. But works well as a substitute for cocktail mixers.

I’m really NOT a gadget person. But I’ve used the heck out of my Instant Pot so far, LOL. Prob won’t buy a soda stream. Unless a a really cheap one comes my way.

We got ours during a white elephant Christmas gift exchange. Would not have bought. After using it, still would not buy it.

Why? Weak carbonation? Odd flavors? I’m just interested in the fizz, not the prefab flavors.

Then you would probably be ok with it. My wife took it thinking it might replace the occasional coke or Sprite. And in that, it failed. But as a soda water or coke/Sprite substitute for a whisky/rum/gin/vodka cocktail, its great. The flavors are just too...unfamiliar for a standalone drink.

About 5 years ago, I put together a system similar to this one: PopSci

I got the 20 lb cylinder which is way too big. I haven't refilled it yet. When I got it filled, it only cost $11. The whole system probably cost about $150.

I use it mostly for soda water, but occasionally I'll carbonate some root beer made from concentrate.

This is a nice makeshift.

I brew and keg beer. I have dedicated two of the five taps in the keezer to soft drinks for my girls. One pre-mixed ... usually vanilla soda but sometimes root beer. The other is just carbonated water, and we keep about a dozen flavors of syrup in the door of the old kegerator, so they can mix something not on tap.

We make the syrup with sucralose to keep them low-cal, and get the concentrates from Prairie Moon. They have almost 100 flavors. We have tried almost half, and most are quite good. They are also much less expensive than SodaStream.

The only real downside was the need for a second regulator in the keezer, since soft drinks serve at much higher psi pressure than beer.
