Slap Ya Momma gumbo mix

Has anyone tried this stuff? I have never tried any type of packaged mix and can't imagine them being very good on their own. Saw this stuff at World Market recently and is got me curious. I'm debating making a small gumbo and adding this to see how it enhances the flavor. Maybe make half the Roux I normally would.

I’ve never tried slap ya mama brand but I have tried Louisiana brand. It is ok. It will scratch the itch if you need a quick something to remind you of gumbo or if you are just in a hurry. It is in no way shape or form a replacement for real gumbo. I wouldn’t use it to stretch a gumbo either because it really doesn’t have a roux flavor. It tastes a lot like “gumbo ramen” if that makes sense.

I think I will make it in a separate pot to gauge the flavor then maybe incorporate some in my stock.

I use the Oakgrove Gumbo BASE often to replace the making of the roux. BTW their MIX has rice already in it, I use the BASE. I do the meats and vegetables as I would normally do.

So it's supposed to be a sub for the roux? Or an add in to the roux and gumbo as a whole?

For a Mid Week gumbo when I want a quick gumbo I use Mama Pauls, 1 lb smoked sausage, a browned onion, a rotisserie chicken and a 1/2 lb of andouille. Comes out pretty good and its done in under 30 minutes.

When in a hurry Louisiana or Oak Grove are fine.
Yeah, its not as rich and deep as real gumbo but its still good

We like the KARY's brand products better than others for a quick bisque or gumbo. For jambalaya, there is a package I find at Fresh Pickens made in Pierre Part that is good. My Grandkids from Texas ask for it everytime they come here and I cart some up to Coppell when we go there.

Thanks for the replys. Got a bit of a late start yesterday so only made my stock. (Gumbo is usually a two day project for me) I will heat the boxed stuff next to my regular gumbo and report back.

Never tried it but a neighbor (older retired couple) uses the Bailey's box stuff. She knows I cook a lot and wanted me to try it and it honestly wasn't that bad. Like others have said, it lacked that deep, rich flavor but for what it was...not bad.
