Best fries: Raising Cane's

it's as bad as the yearly win that McDonalds used to get for best fries. How much do I have to pay to get them to say I have the best fries?

Everyone knows this is basically paid advertising.

I think it is user voted, really. And all the good chefs in Nola are looking at us through binoculars, and reading these lists, and thinking "no thank you".

The fact that Maison Lacour wasn't even nominated for Best Overall completely invalidates any credibility these awards have.

PF Changs receiving 40% of the vote in that category, with Omi not even finishing as a runner-up, is an absolute joke.

There are two sushi places in town that are by far head-and-shoulders above everyone else: Sushi Yama and Umami. Having Ichiban and Tsunami ahead of them is ridiculous.

I have some insider knowledge. It is not paid advertising. The folks at 225 go out of their way to make sure there's no ballot stuffing. It's a popularity contest. Look at the parking lots of these places. They're busy restaurants. We make fun of some of them on this board, but they do well.

And the idea that New Orleans chefs put some sort of stock in a popularity contest put on by a magazine is laughable. Weren't we making fun of a NOLA.com list of the best hamburgers in the city a week ago? Think that's gonna have anything to do with if they open a Shake Shack in NOLA, the fact that readers of a poll like Bud's? Hell no.

You just have to go to the website, enter your info, and vote.

Problem is, there are so many categories that it's impossible for anyone to have an educated opinion on all of them, so people vote for whatever name they've heard, or whatever place they've seen an ad for, or whatever used to be good 10 years ago, etc.

Agree. Plus, you can't expect the average person to know that LPG has the best burger in New Orleans or something obscure like that. Your average person goes out to eat once every so often with family or friends, and they go somewhere they know.

It used to be if you subscribed to 225s online newsletter, they sent you a link to a ballot where you would nominate your favorite seafood restaurant, Mexican place, bar, etc. An outside firm would go through the nominees and used them as the choices for the survey. And I think it was set up so you could only vote once.

I mean, I'm aware of free newspapers and magazines that do these kinds of reader polls and you had to submit the form that ran in the publication. Businesses would just pick up stacks of issues and get employees and regulars to vote for them as the best bar, burger restaurant, wing joint, etc.
