accidentally ran across these last night...and am PISSED no one had ever mentioned them to me before.

basically the product is Zero Carbs, Zero Calories, Zero Sodium, Gluten-Free, great source of calcium

took it home and and got scared when I opened the bag(fishy smell)

rinsed it off, smell gone, threw it into a curry sauce that i had made.....very little difference

went to grocery store at lunch, bought more, zapped in microwave with a chicken and spinach dip.....shared it with co-workers....they couldn't tell the difference except one girl said that it the noodle got a bit rubbery after it got cold.

I look at it like Artificial sweetener in diet coke or skim milk......the first few times it may taste strange......but with it being so significantly better for you......do it for a week and never look back after.

seriously, try this shite if you are on a low/no carb kick.....I can not be more adamant about it.

I LOVE the spagetti

Cost: $1.25/bag(serving size for big eater, or normal for two people)

I have some of these noodles in my fridge right now. Literally picked them up this morning and wondered what/when I was going to cook with them. I'll certainly be trying them soon.

don't cook them

I did last night and it was a bit rubbery...but tolerable

just now.....I put them in a deli container and just ran hot water over them and drained them.

after I heated everything in the microwave, I just stirred the noodles in.

I don't understand why this hasn't been an option at restaurants......white or wheat bread.....regular or shirataki?

the stuff keeps for 6 months and can be prepared in 30 secs

I tried it but didn't think much of it. I like vegetable alternatives like spaghetti squash and spiral cut zucchini better.

agreed. at least you get some flavor out of that. these noodles are basically just water and dietary fiber from what I've read. have to be pretty damn bland.

and what's the prep-time/cost on those options?

the spaghetti shirataki I had today was dead on to being pasta to me....the fettuccine last night was a bit more questionable

only three things so far

1. tasteless, but that's what your sauce is for
2. can be a bit rubbery, more so if you cook them, but the thinner the noodle(ie spagetti vs fettucine) the less it is an issue.
3. length of noodle too long, got to figure out a way to cut them before mixing in sauce

wonder if they soak up the flavors in the water you boil them in like regular pasta does? I've noticed that rice noodles in pho don't really do that.

I don't think you are supposed to cook them.....I did last night and they got a bit tough

today, I just rinsed them and threw it in to heated sauce....and they were soft.

I read somewhere to rinse them and then put them in salt water for a bit for 30 mins before draining and putting them into the sauce just before service.....but Multiple places have said cooking them makes them tough

You won't notice as much chewiness in a recipe if you don't cook the Shirataki Noodles for long. The package directions and many recipes instruct you to par-boil the noodles.......just don't do it or do it quickly.

If you think that Shirataki Noodles taste like rubber bands, you're probably right. And you are probably over-cooking them.

Keep in mind that Shirataki Noodles don't really need to be cooked like regular pasta. Never, EVER overcook the Shirataki Noodles! They are easily warmed and "cooked" with hot water

Where did you get these things? I'm trying to drastically cut carbs -- I'm becoming a fat arse -- and this seems like a good way to still eat curries and pasta sauces.

Tried em...slippery, tasteless. Would rather eat a bit less regular pasta and move more than eat chewy, taste-free squiggles. Then again, I won't eat sugar substitutes either.

in the tofu/vegan area...not the pasta/rice area...in the two grocery stores I've been to

Safeway
Fresh and Easy

they sell them at trader joes and whole foods....but not sure where

Well said. I'd rather just eat less of the real thing than try to take a flavorless shortcut.

Yeah, i understand...but as you said while people prefer Coke....1.6 billion cases of coke are sold to 927 million cases of diet coke.....while pepsi is at 874

the guilt free nature more than makes up the minor perceived differences IMHO

Ah. See, I don't feel guilt when I eat food. So no guilt sauce to flavor the noodles just makes them weird, tasteless, rubbery non-noodles.

Guilt is highly overrated.
