...qualifies someone to say that? Don't we all love food? Is it just an appreciation for the skills and ingredients needed?

I thought a "foodie" was someone that took a pic of their food before they ate it. Then shared it on the interwebs where no one cares.

Some people are less adventurous. I know adults who won't eat vegetables and generally have the eating habits of a picky 5 year old. You probably aren't much of a "foodie" if you won't eat anything besides fried chicken strips, hot dogs, cheese burgers, and pizza.
Being a "foodie," although I would never self describe that term because I think it sounds lame, might mean that you go out of your way to try new things and are open to unusual ideas. I guess it's just like being a connoisseur of anything else.

Being a Foodie isn't really a bad thing. It's just a term for people that like to cook and eat, consider dining as a major part of their travel experience and like sharing information about food and eating out. It's as non-pretentious a term as exists in the culinary world and it's nothing to be ashamed about.

I like saying someone is a foodie rather than a gourmet.
Foodie doesn't have to be a bad term, but it sure gets the panties in a wad with the quickness for some reason.

Yeah, people read more into this term than what it is. Yelpers (South Park episode helped here) and Facebook food posters gave a very generic term a bad rap.
