I don’t drink either so know anything about these. I’d like to get a nice or special bottle for a Christmas gift, maybe no higher than $50? It won’t be the only gift, and if he doesn’t like it, it’s a waste. He likes to sip evenings, not a bourbon fan. For reference, he drinks dark beer, and doesn’t care for flavored beer. Thank you. (I see the scotch thread, but it’s so much and lots of bourbon, and am hoping to get a few suggestions and my question not lost.)

Laphroig is for the hardcore. Definitely not my cup of tea.

Highland Park is right around $50 and I think very good.

And I agree that Laphroig might be too intense for some.

Don’t buy someone Laphroaig unless you know they enjoy peaty scotch. It’s definitely not for everyone.

Bruichladdich's Classic Laddie

Glenfarclas 12 year

I love Laphroaig 10 but unless you know that he likes peated scotch, don't get that for him.

I would stay away from heavily pleated scotches like Laphroaig, Lagavulin or Ardbeg if you are not sure what he likes.

Lighter fruity options-

Glenmorangie-10

Glenlivet-12

Redbreast 12 is a Irish Whisky that is also light and fruity

Darker notes of raisin and spice like Christmas spices

Glendronach 12

Glenmorangie Lasanta

Glenfarclas 12

Aberlour 12

These are all sherries whiskies all of the. are in your range and should be easy to find

I am Scotch lover and this is solid whisky. But I wouldn’t get it for someone unless I knew what they liked.

I love the peated Islay whiskies but some people hate the earthiness and smoke.

This is a good inexpensive Scotch great for people testing the waters.

Would start with something unpeated again unless you know they like that type of whisky.

If he's not a scotch drinker, avoid that completely. If he's not a bourbon drinker, you can introduce him to bourbon with a bottle of Elijah Craig Small Batch ($26). You can't go wrong with Elijah Craig, even if he already is a bourbon drinker. Total Wine is selling an Elijah Craig gift pack (still $26) that will be available for pick up in December. Order it online and pick it up when it comes in.
You're welcome.

If he likes stouts such as Guinness, Jameson makes a Caskmates edition Irish whiskey that is finished in stout barrels. A bottle runs 30ish bucks and is widely available at most liquor stores and Da Rouse.
