The ordering of a filet could explain the perceived lack of flavor.

Regardless, you're saying your meal was miserable but I only see one legit gripe. That's if the cut of meat was poor. I question this though because aren't the filets prime meat?
Seems like you were having a bad experience before the steak even got to the table so maybe your opinion was skewed.
Oh no! There's extra silverware and glasses on the table. Oh no! We got people shooting liquor and having fun. The drunk people thing I can see being annoying but that isn't the restaurant's fault. Changing the menu is a good thing imo.
Ive had one maybe 'miserable' experience at a restaurant and that involved a waiter spilling 2 glasses of wine on me and an appetizer, all on separate trips to the table. That could be labeled miserable and I've never had anything close to that at Ruths.

Been married for 13 years myself. My wife worked restaurant jobs up until I met her while she waiting tables at the Chimes. She let her keen eye for service and food interrupt a ton of our nice meals and it bugged the crap out of me. Why pay $200 for a nice meal if she's going to tear apart the waiter, she started working at a fine dining restaurant at 15, or just be focused on the wrong things? Anyway, we've managed to discuss it enough where she either doesn't focus as much or just holds her comments. That type of mentality works great if you're a critic, but I don't want to go eat with one of those either.
For me a filet has to be blue rare for me to enjoy the taste/texture.

Does the USDA have prime filets? I know the marbling is almost non existent in one.

I will admit my choice of wording was poor. It was far from miserable. It just wasn't what I expect for those kinds of prices. The place setting thing seems minor and I understand that, I expect more however. I expect at a fine dining establishment that those small things are addressed before I ask, the small bread crumb knife the napkin replacement if I excuse myself from the table and those kinds of things. If I wanted Chili's service then I would have paid for Chili's.

I think it's a stretch to claim Ruth's a fine dinning establishment

Probably would have enjoyed the food and colorful atmosphere, but we were more in the mood for Duckhorn than Boone's farm...
Oh no, you are mistaken. We only break out the Boone's farm for special occasions. Last night we slummed it with cakebread cellars.
Anywho, next time you we in town check out the chili's on Ambassador.

It is borderline. One of the type establishment that have "fine dining" in their name or on the sign.

And don't let him lie to you - I'm sure I've enjoyed many a bottles of boones farm with hanky in our day

Wow, OK you got me. Is there such an animal in Lafayette?

I've been continually unimpressed with the fulton St location. Never bad, just "meh"

I don't get this. I had a few coworkers like this when I worked in the service industry. If you hate when people are assholes to you, why would you be an a-hole to others?
If anything, waiting tables has made me 10000x nicer to people. I can't tell you the last time I've had a service issue. Doesn't happen to me.
And if I dine out with someone who pays too much attention to it, I won't dine out with that person ever again. I don't know how you didn't strangle your wife for that

Ruth's is a place for people to spend a good bit of money celebrating and having a good time IMO.
I've gotten pretty liquored up anytime I've gone there, and it has never been a quiet or proper place. Is it cheap? No indeed. But it isn't a quiet/romantic date night place either.
I went to Ruffino's the other day and was screaming over the drunks and music and divorcees hitting on each other all around me.

I am familiar. My family is from Lake Arthur. I play a golf scramble every year in Jennings put on by my Godmother.

She'd only complain to me...but still, I don't want to hear it. She 'retired' from restaurants after college, don't get me wrong she's had some shitty jobs in doing so, but her complaining about the service and anything else you can imagine, think restaurant critic, didn't die with it. I always ordered what I knew she would like and as soon as she give the disapproving look at what she'd order I'd just swap the plates. We've gotten past all of that now, but damn.

Yes, there are prime filets. Anyways I have eaten at Ruths in Nola, Irvine, and Anaheim. Always meets expectations and always a treat. Regarding the op's bad cut you should have sent it back and voiced your complaint on the spot. My daughter once ordered a filet at Flemings (direct competitor / comparable IMO) in downtown Los Angeles medium rare. It came out well done. I voiced my complaint to the manager. He agreed, replaced it, comped her steak, and sent her home with a box of chocolates. These places (high end steak houses) want to please you and have you come back again and again IMO.

Never had wine there but many a bud light or miller light... I've been here since '93 save for a 7 year stretch in BR for college and 1st job.
