we had dinner at mr mao for the first time last night, prior to a show at tips. its right across the street from the rouse
s parking lot at the former location of the late great dick & jenny's. easy and convenient, if you are wanting a cool place to eat/drink/hang before a show this is the place
here's the menu from last night
very comfortable and funky inside, theres a large bar area in the rear and an open kitchen in the front dining area. service was fantatstic, our waiter was engaging & friendly and knew the menu in detail, so we let him drive.
it was before 7pm so happy hours was also going on. we had rice cakes and fried corn from the happy hour menu, then the pork belly, avocado chaat, pani puri, tuna and an incredible chocolate/cinnamon/cayenne ice cream. two cocktails and two beers. $175 with tip, worth every penny. the food is interesting, super flavorful, well composed and fun to eat.
10/10 on the food/atmosphere/service. cant wait to try it again.

Its a good place.
When they first opened they were rolling around dim sum carts at night, and stopped during covid. Not sure if they have brought that back as I have only been back for brunch

tbh, Mao seems a little too eclectic for the bunch man. Surprised to read this

2nd dinner at mr mao last night, again befpre a show at tips, again fantastic. this time it was packed to the gills, but we had a reservation and the waiter we had last time again had our table...shane is the man.
stir fried eggplant
chicken wontons
prahok ktiss
blue crab strozzapreti
roasted chicken
chocolate cake
beers & cocktails
amazing food...exciting to eat as the flavors of latin america, asia & even italian & southern american blend but remain distinct. its hard to describe but its flat out delicious. world class service and atmosphere. love this place, 10/10 again
bonus review: we stayed the night at the chloe on st charles, its right next door to the old 4141 if you remember that (RIP). highly recommend; huge room, massive shower, right on the avenue and includes a very good breakfast a la carte on the porch
