Ella Brennan, the matriarch of one of the south's most celebrated restaurant families, who became nationally known for popularizing haute Creole cuisine and superior service at her family's Commander's Palace restaurant while mentoring several superstar chefs, has died. She was 92.

I had the pleasure of sitting with her and Richard Brennan for brunch at Commanders on Lundi Gras when I was at LSU. Nice lady but the 20 year old me would have said she was 90 then. I now realize she was in her mid 60’s. She seemed so old to me. LoL.

She can hang out with Paul Prudhomme now.

To be fair it is thicker like a stew

And the last thing I would be worried about at that caliber restaurant would be a lack of fillers like rice

And also hang w/ Jamie Shannon, who died way, way too young. (Tory McPhail's predecessor) If you ever enjoyed shrimp & tasso Henican (with the pepper jelly), then you tasted his brilliance.

RIP Miss Ella. She was the Grande Dame of the New Orleans restaurant scene. I had lunch at Commander's Palace on Monday ( Memorial Day )and knew that she was not doing well. Commander's has been my favorite restaurant for decades. I am glad I have an autographed copy of her book.

We had artichoke bisque that day and it made my entry for "best thing I ever ate" in that thread last week.

I was a bartender at Le Bon Temps Roule (Bar) on Magazine back in the very early 90's. The Chefs would come in after their work. Jamie came in sometimes, he was a nice guy.
