other than that and the look, its basically the same otherwise as the $700 units.

That unit you linked is $848 on Amazon. I have had good luck with a Whirlpool Gold stainless gas range, the oven is very accurate, too. I had a real exhaust vent, ie not a crappy recirculating vent, installed over our gas range, million times better for removing food odors, blackening, broccoli, etc. Moved the microwave to an under cabinet mount (off the countertop) to the left of the range. Gas is good.

Presidents' Day usually brings some good deals on appliances.

I would be extra careful when installing gas. pay a little extra if needed. "house go boom" is not fun.

thanks..one more question (lol..last one!)

what about grilling steaks, etc on the range? is there an accessory you use to do this? or does everyone just do the 'iron skillet' method. curious if anyone has bought any accessories outside of the griddle plate it comes with to grill food?

sorry i'm so dumb on all this stuff..this is a whole new world to me.

You can get a combo griddle at bed bath and beyond fairly cheap. (flat on one side for pancakes and such, ridges on the other for grilling.) Make sure it sits flat on your center burner grates.

If you have a microwave hood (fan), be prepared to open windows or disable smoke alarms when doing high heat steaks. we went with a 400 cfm(???) hood and pulled the m'wave down because we had an extea countertop m'wave.

My stove came with a griddle top for the center.

And that oval burner fits the bottom of my Le Creuset dutch oven perfectly.

UPDATE: piedmont gas came out today and gave me an estimate for both running a gas line to the back wall where the range will go and while they were at it, i had them go ahead & see how much it would be to run another 10ft over to the washroom so i would have a gas hookup for the dryer if i ever decided to go gas.

Short story, it would be about $300 for just the stove line (and connecting it) but for $130 more (one hour of labor) they would add the line to the washroom as well.

I think I'm going to do it..

only..because this is TN and they're adding more BTUs..they have to pull a permit.. which adds another $100.

So total is $570 which includes tax, materials, both lines and the damn permit.

Also, I asked about the 3/4 line; they said I already have a 3/4 line under my house as the trunk they're "t-ing" off of but they said they were installing a 1/2" for the stove. I asked if that would be a problem and they assured me they would make sure there was more than enough gas available for it.

So there you go. I have a plumber coming out Monday for another estimate (actually he's the guy who installed my new HVAC last year) but I'm a little concerned about the whole permit piece and whether this guy is going to know what is up.

Like another poster said, this isn't something I want to play around with..I kinda like the idea of the actual gas company doing the work.

Not that scary, if you are that concerned spray some windex over every gas fitting, if it bubbles then you have a problem. As long as the plumber used teflon tape (the yellow or pink) or teflon paste and tightened it, you will be fine.

Plumbers and electricians have some of the easiest trades, but keep up a myth of DIY fear.. that is not needed.

I just bought a broken Viking drop in the other day, fixed it up and sold it for $600. That too me was high, but a good price for that brand. Very high CFM on the burners.

I currently have a Jenn-Aire dual fuel oven/burner.

Whatever you get if you love to cook you will prefer gas over your glass cook top.

actually not a terrible price. I recently charged $625 to hook up and assemble five space heaters, and run 15 feet of pipe, with only one punch through. I think it was 4-5 hours of labor, due to the difficulty of the space heaters (the kind that look like fireplaces). <I'm licensed insured and carry multiple certifications so its okay..>

But it really is not a hard project to do your self, just depends on your comfort level.

Me too. I bought the 12" tall oven vent 'backsplash' thing to go on it. How'd you finish yours?

wow that is gorgeous. i'm not quite at the level of kitchen remodelling yet.

so now i'm looking for a cheap gas dryer..it never ends does it? i mean why not? if i can find a $200 special on craigslist, why not have them hook the dryer up at the same time they do the range.

i hear gas dryers take 1/2 the time to dry clothes..thats huge for me cuz my kids can mess up some clothes and i often go to sleep forgetting to dry the load in the washer and it takes too long the next morning to dry them as we're rushing around getting ready for school.

i'm pretty excited about the new range. maybe i'll get a few bucks for the old one as well.
