Looking for restaurant for Friday evening in Newport. I have some ideas but want to find out what the board knows as well.

Definitely either Castle Hill Inn or The Moorings. And if you go to The Moorings, make sure to get the lobster donuts as an appetizer. Far and away best thing on the menu.

Just booked a reservation at the Moorings. Had to go with 515. It was either that or 945. Yikes.

We got other feedback that it is "wicked good."

Any good sports bars where we could catch the olympics later in the evening?

Thanks Motorboat. I'll take a look at it.

Eh, sports bars are lacking a bit in Newport. I worked there for a couple years and when I had to stay there over the weekend I never really found a place that was anything above average. Mudville Pub or Tickets Bar and Grill would be my recommendations.

The Clarke Cooke House is amazing. Absolutely go there.

The clam chowder served at the Black Pearl is the single best iteration of the dish that I have ever encountered.

This is nowhere near a hidden secret - the place has been there for decades - but the chowder is consistently near on perfect.

It is a thin but creamy New England style chowder (not the clear broth Rhode Island style but also not the gloppy tourist slop), packed with clean bright briny clam flavors bathed in butter and fresh herbs. On more than one occasion I've ordered a bowl as a starter along with something to follow, finished my bowl and asked them to pack whatever second course I ordered to go and had them bring me another bowl of that damn chowder.
