This is the opposite imo.

OK Joe’s are in a box and you have to put it together. You will not have a good seal at the firebox/cooking chamber connection

I confirmed this exact thing after I did more research after hearing about the brazos in this thread. Luckily my local academy has all 3 on the floor and I was able to put my hands on the following.

OC pecos
OC brazos
OK Joe highland

The OK joe is junk compared to old country brand. It’s between the pecos and brazos. I’m leaning pecos bc the only difference than the brazos is the steel thickness. And reviews say that the pecos holds heat very well.

It’s junk period from what I could tell. The quality went way down when the brand name was sold to char broil. As mentioned, Horizon pits are the original OK joes and are better quality.

Yep, steel thickness is the $600 difference. Pecos is 14 gauge (5/64”) with 11 gauge (1/8”) doors. Brazos is 1/4” all around I believe.

It does. My only issues have been my own as I learn and get better at maintaining a good coal bed and fire. I haven’t had any issues because of the pit itself. I really don’t think it can be beat at that price.

The brazos is good, the great part about Academy is you can look at all they have a choose which or if you want to buy.

Don't overlook craigslist and Facebook marketplace. You can find a deal if you're not in a rush. Usually a $35 harbor freight angle grinder and some high heat paint are all that is needed to freshen one up.

Just make sure it is at least 1/4" steel for heat retention.

Completely agree. Here in Austin I found the OC Brazos for $300 on craigslist or fb marketplace. Quick hit with a wire-wheel, new coat of hi-heat paint, added a probe-port and it was ready to roll.

I love it so far. Large enough to have several cuts of meat without having too large a fire. Smoke stack positioned at grate level. 1/4 inch everywhere. It's been a champ so far.

Lucky. I scoured for awhile for a deal like that, but I gave up.

I just went down a rabbit hole watching Allen's videos on YouTube of him building smokers. Check it out if you have hours to spare

I'm also in the market for a stick burner and after checking his out (40" reverse flow smoker) and at his price point it's looking pretty good. I can drive up to avoid shipping costs. Can't comment too much because I've never used one, but it looks like an awesome smoker.
