thanks all
I'll end up going with one as long as it has the drain pan or is a replaceable attachment .. viking is expensive but looks great.
PS - a great use case will be a platform for my instant pot; it makes a ton of steam during sauteing and will be nice to have a solid platform under the vent

I have a Jenn Air downdraft. It’s not like the best thing ever or anything. But the griddle attachment is the best thing ever.
If I had the money and an overhead hood, I’d get a nice one that was only knobs. My Jenn Air motherboard has gone out twice in the ten years I’ve had it. I wish I could’ve purchased a purely mechanical one, but it didn’t exist.

I gave a Frigidaire Gallery Series.
I use the griddle for the middle burner more than the regular grate.
Cook eggs, (over easy, omelets, scrambled) occasionally pancakes most every morning. Also good for grilled cheese sandwiches. I even cook personal size pizzas on it.
Once it’s seasoned, pretty much just wipe clean, but then it does need a good washing sometimes.

I have a Viking with griddle. Don’t use it often. Would prefer more burners and a separate griddle to place over burners, but I guess it all depends on what you cook. It is great for pancakes, but I don’t cook them often.

This 1000%!
When I got my thermador stuff they had a great sale going on. Buy this and get that for free or for stupid cheap. I got the biggest (54” I think) vent they have with a remote blower motor. I absolutely love it. Sucks every drop of smoke out and it’s not defining. I heat my cast iron up in a 450 degree oven to hard sear after sous vide cooking and there are no smoke alarm issues. Buy once cry once....
Avocado burgers on the griddle
Some SV ribeye burgers on some angry cast iron.

I have a Thermador with the indoor grill. Use it all the time to grill small amounts of meat and when it is raining out. I bought the Thermador griddle that sits on two burners and use it all the time. There are six in our family, so it gets a lot of use for stir fry, fajitas, philly cheese steak, and burgers with onions. We got the big vent, works like a charm.
