I accidentally bought a “Picnic Pork Shoulder” instead of Boston Butt and would like to smoke it tomorrow on my Traeger. Can I cook this the same way? I wound up trimming the skin to expose more of the fat to cook it as if I was doing a Butt

Yes. The shoulder consists of the butt and the picnic. The picnic is just the other half of the shoulder. Cook it the same.

Definitely. Bone is different for sure, but it'll pull if you cook it the same.

Many BBQ restaurants will use picnic shoulder when pork butt are unavailable. Hell, I'll use picnic because they are usually cheaper /#.
Leave the skin on next time and dehydrate it after smoking, then fry it to make chicharrón.
