Unpretentious philistines everywhere rejoice: A recent study suggests that it is too hard for even experts to differentiate the taste between wines. Statistically-apt wine collector Robert Hodgson ran a scientific test on the illustrious judges at the California state fair wine competition, and found that only 10% of judges could tell that they were being given the same exact wine multiple times. There is other mounting scientific evidence that suggests that people inherently differentiate a bottle of wines quality by its cost and its bottle. Effectively speaking, this uppity domain of human knowledge is unraveling in credence, and the people who thought "all wines taste the same" are largely vindicated.

This kinda makes me chuckle. I think I hate wine snobs worse than hipsters.

Great. Now I can just buy yellowtail and berrenger barefoot and be done with trying to find good stuff at good prices anymore.

I can guarantee you that this is not true for all wines. If you want to argue I will buy any bottle of relatively cheap wine, say $20 and put it against another bottle I have, from some place called Lost Vineyards.

I do tend to agree with the overall message of articles like this, but there is a line where you can easily cross into shite wines at a certain price point.

This is horse shite. I have went through multitudes of wine tastings and can assure you that I can tell huge differences between varietals and often times regions, vineyards and notes held within. How can you say that a tobacco filled, peppery meritage is anywhere close to a Pinot noir or merlot with limited character. I can taste the differences between merlot, Pinot noir, Cabernet, Syrah, zin and often times malbecs.

Agreed.

Wines "breathe" differently. I find sometimes, that if I let a glass of wine sit for a while, then take a sip, it tastes differently than the first glass from that same bottle did.

Yes.Yes you can.

However, surely the imbecilic author was not referring to someone with such a refined and distinguished palate such as yours when he penned that drivel. He was most certainly referring to the pretentious self anointed " connoisseur" who drones on and on incessantly about how they can differentiate everything to include but not limited to alta-chemical and seasonal changes in the terrior of their favorite vino.

Each panel of four judges would be presented with their usual "flight" of samples to sniff, sip and slurp. But some wines would be presented to the panel three times, poured from the same bottle each time. The results would be compiled and analysed to see whether wine testing really is scientific.

Quote from the "study" with the most important part bolded. Wines breath once opened so it doesn't surprise me that experts can't tell that they are drinking the same wine over the course of the tasting when its from the same bottle.

No one is arguing there is difference between Merlot and Pinot Noir. The difference between 80$ Merlot and 20$ Merlot is the relevant question.

Are they saying that a cheap Pinot Noir and an expensive Pinot Noir taste the same, or that a Pinot Noir and a Burgundy taste the same? I could see the first one, but not the second.

that's it.

I cant imagine these experts aren't decanting, therefore making your argument moot. Or they are pouring from the bottle, where no matter the time open doesn't allow enough surface area to breath. Either way the argument is not valid.

Many studies over many years, over many areas, about many things wine snob all show the same thing.

i don't think it's going to change that much over the course of the within 20 minutes they get their next glass.

and if they were experts, wouldn't they be able to tell the difference between a wine when it's been opened for a few minutes versus 30-40 minutes?

Especially knowing that if you have ever been to wine country they spend half the time telling you about breathing, and opening up...yadda yadda.

yes, I have tastebuds and don't look for any type of "research" to support my asinine beliefs.

Seriously, grab a bottle of mad dog and a bottle of any house red and see if you can taste a difference.
