Walking around staring at other peoples' food until someone makes eye contact, then asking, "What's that?" is the way to go.

I actually think it would be sort of interesting to see a high end dining place try to replicate a sort of TGI Fridays/Chilis style picture menu.

Interesting. I love a picture menu.
What about photos on the online menu? Plenty of "non trashy" restaurants around BR have picture menus on their website. Not necessarily for every dish, but for many of them.
