Paladar 511 - new place in N.O.

Went there last night. Its in the Marigny, two blocks off the river. Beautiful build -out in a newly renovated bldg that is mostly an apt complex. Place is good, but its a Mariza's wanna be. Menu is mainly pizza, with a few other Italian inspired dishes (ravioli, fish dish, etc). Wine list is perfunctory (4 wines by the glass; only about 10 by the bottle). Started off with the caprese salad, which had fresh melon added to it. Was the highlight of the meal. Wife got the house made ricotta ravioli which was somewhat bland. I ordered the san maranzo pizza (tomato, mascarpone and arugula) which was good, and had a nice blistered crust. But, Mariza's does a much better job at these same dishes(maybe not the caprese) and at the same price, and is only a 1/4 mile away. Decent, and its open for lunch, but not certain I'd return for dinner.

I was there last night as well around 8. I agree it was similar to Mariza but lacked the depth of Mariza's menu. We enjoyed our pizza a lot, that being said. Spicy cioppino was flavorful but wasn't much of stew. Kitchen was slow but they were apologetic and comped us a desert.

I thought the salads were really good.

Well, damn. We had a F&DB meeting without anyone knowing about it!

were you exiled to the Friendly Bar while waiting for your table by any chance

No - but I did find it odd that they offered that suggestion to us. The couple waiting in front of us asked for a cocktail while they were waiting, and they did oblige, so we did likewise.

Nice review! I want to try the place, but sounds like it's a neighborhood spot that may not be worthy of major effort to seek out.
What was the price point?

I mean, its certainly not set up like a neighborhood place. The spot is absolutely beautiful.
However, just in that area, Mariza does pretty similar stuff better.
I would say that Paladar is a little more "California" if that makes any sense.

Entrees were in the $13-$24 range. As I posted earlier, I'd go again for lunch, especially for the view and ambience. But, in terms of food quality, there are better places within a 1/2 mile radius.

It's fairly cheap.
